    Hi again!

once again, i got a new problem and havent found a solution yet. It is the following:
I saved a couple of *.swf videos from a site... mozilla's firefox (as well the internet explorer) saves temporary files into a folder called "cache". they have very weird names like "25254C66d01" or sth.. it is a combination of numbers and letters, but they are exactly the same files that i watched on the website...

anyway, i've copied those files and now i am not able to play it with vlc... it may sound stupid and there might be better ways to save such files... BUT normally it works!

    does anyone have any ideas?

    THANKS in Advance

Get a download accelerator like Flashget and tell it to automatically download the shockwave extention, ***.swf.

the thing is i want to download that stuff at my school.. cause i cant afford it at my home. but the teachers installed a programm that doesnt not allow you to install programs and further it doesnt let you up/download media files like mp3, avi, mpg, wmv,... and stuff.

so i thought this is cool way to get the files, without help from any other programm!

but i just checked and it seems like i need just a new divx codec! further i noticed that the audio works, but not the video... means there must be something wrong with the codec, at least thats the first thing that comes to mind...

i'll get the new one. i hope that's the problem.. i'll download it tomorrow and will check if it works!

i know that using Flashget would be much easier, but its useless if i want to download the files at my school, where i dont have permission to install it.

    but thanks for now!

I've downloaded and installed the latest divx and quicktime players/codecs and it still isnt working.

the site from where i have them is called www.veoh.com
i've searched for other users who have the same problem as me. although they used the veoh client for downloading files, they have the same problem. theres audio, but no video. the administrator of their forum just recommends to download and install the latest codec for both divx, and quicktime... i've already done that and it is still not working!

as i said, the audio is working, this probably means that theres something wrong with the codec.

    any ideas appreciated

Maybe this will help. The cached video from Veoh seem to be .flv files with the extension .jsp (at least they are with IE). There's an flv player here:

    http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Flash_Video_Player

that opens flv files in an Internet Explorer browser window (maybe Firefox?). Nothing to install, just unzip. To just play a video, rename it video.flv and put it in the same folder as the player files and open "flvplayer.html" in your browser. If you don't mind doing some html editing, there are some other options too.

i tried it, but the video did still not play, just audio! i just thought getting the latest vlc version is a good idea as well... so i am gonna get it!

i'd love to download the right codec, so i could also convert it into other formats...

what alternative options to do that do you know?

    thx

Hmm, kinda' stumped, it worked for me. Perhaps an update to Macromedia flash player? I gave vlc a shot, no luck there (great tool though, just the same). Mplayer played audio but reported "Error while decoding frame! [mpeg4 @ 00A70630]header damaged" for the video, no video playback. About the same with MPC with a newer version of FFDshow. There is another player you could try here:

    http://www.flashstreamworks.com/flvplayer/

but this one needs to be installed. Another possiblility is to use the On2 vp6 codec but that's not free. After that, I'm out of ideas. Sorry if this didn't help.

Edit: I haven't used it, but FLV Extract might be able to split the files into seperate audio and video that you can work with for conversion to another format.

    thanks for your help!

flvplayer was useless for me, but flv extract wasn't. i demuxed the files, into mp3 and an avi file. i mainly just need the audio source, because i'll get alternative video source as well, but anyway.. i'd love to have the video file too... at least i now know, that the video file is an FLV4 Codec!

i've just checked and realised there are ways to convert flv4 files to avi, mpeg, whatever... but it seems to be quite complicated (i've yet just found methods that require about 3-5 different programms to do that, of course i prefer a program that can convert it directly from flv4 to mpeg). i'll need to take a closer look at it, but for today i can't afford spending more time on this, cause i have to learn for an important test. Unfortunately i am still a pupil....

anyway, do you have the FLV4 Codec or do you know where to download it? from what i've heard FFDshow has this codec integrated, no? if yes, is there an alternative method to convert flv4 files to avi or mpeg? i prefer Super for encoding, but for that i need to find the right codec.

No, I don't have the flv4 codec. I think it's one of On2's codecs. FFDShow does seem to have support for flv4, though I couldn't get the Veoh video to play with it. SUPER will probably convert the video from FLV Extract, I'm guessing. Anyway, glad to help and good luck on your test!
