Not sure if this will help , as it depends on all connected equipment to be working and all required device drivers installed ... but here from sony :
It is seperated into three sub groups

Choose the required method of transfer ... and follow the instructions carefully ... ps ... "PRINT" this information .

Digital8® or MiniDV camcorder :
IMPORTANT:
* Not all Sony® camcorders with a USB port have USB streaming capability. Consult the instruction manual of the camcorder for compatibility information. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site. If your camcorder does not have a USB port, you can transfer video using an i.LINK® cable (IEEE 1394) or Audio/Video cables and compatible video capture software.
* The computer must have a standard, factory-installed USB port and compatible video capture software to complete this procedure. Many video editing software applications include a capture function. If you have video editing software, you may not need a separate video capture software application.
* USB streaming is not compatible with computers running an Apple® Mac OS® operating system. Macintosh users can transfer video using either Audio/Video cables or an i.LINK cable and Macintosh-compatible video capture software.
* USB streaming is not supported in the Microsoft® Windows® 98 operating system.
* If model-specific information is required to complete any of the steps in this solution, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
1. Turn on the computer.
2. On the computer, install the USB driver for the digital camcorder.
IMPORTANT: Only the USB driver included on the supplied CDROM will properly enable the digital camcorder for USB streaming.
3. Turn on the digital camcorder to the VTR, VCR or PLAYBACK mode.
4. Turn on the USB streaming feature of the digital camcorder.
5. Connect the USB cable to the digital camcorder.
6. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the computer.
7. Cue the video to the beginning of the video footage to be transferred.
8. Start the video capture software on the computer.
NOTE: Some Sony digital camcorders come with PIXELA ImageMixer™ software. Click the link below for instructions on using this software with the Sony digital camcorder:
* PIXELA ImageMixer software
If the software included with your camcorder has been lost or damaged, or your camcorder did not come with a bundled software application, a copy of either software package can be purchased from the Sony® Direct Accessories and Parts Center Web site or by calling (800) 488-7669.
i.LINK® connection (IEEE 1394) :
IMPORTANT: Video capture software and a compatible video capture card must be installed on the computer. Depending on the computer manufacturer, various video capture cards and software (Adobe® Premiere, Roxio® VideoWave®, Microsoft® Windows Movie Maker, etc.) may be available or already installed on your computer. If necessary, contact the manufacturer of your computer for further information.
NOTES:
* If model-specific information is required to complete any of the steps in this solution, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
* Many Sony® VAIO® computers are bundled with Sony DVgate™ Motion or DVgate Plus software for video capturing. Some Sony VAIO computers also include Click To DVD™ software that will allow video capture to the computer hard drive or directly to a DVD.
1. Connect an i.LINK® cable (also known as IEEE 1394) to the i.LINK port on the digital camcorder.
2. Connect the other end of the i.LINK® cable to the computer.
NOTE: The i.LINK® ports on computers and capture cards may have either 4-pin or 6-pin connections; Sony® digital camcorders use i.LINK® ports with 4 pins. If your computer only has a 6-pin i.LINK® port, then it will be necessary to use a 4-pin to 6-pin i.LINK® cable.
3. Turn on the digital camcorder by moving the POWER switch to the VTR position.
4. Rewind the tape in the camcorder to the beginning of the video.
5. Turn on the computer.
NOTICE : Step 5 is VERY , VERY IMPORTANT ... or damage can result to both camera and/or pc ... do not do this any other way ... it's a warning .
6. Start the video capture software on the computer.
It should now be possible to copy the video using the video capture software if the computer hardware and software are configured correctly. However, if the video capture software is not recognizing the camcorder connection to the computer ...
i.LINK® (IEEE 1394) connection from the camcorder is not recognized by the computer.
1. Ensure the i.LINK® cable is connected securely to the camcorder and computer.
2. Ensure the camcorder is turned on and being powered by the supplied AC power adapter.
3. Ensure the camcorder is configured properly to output a signal through the i.LINK port.
IMPORTANT: Some digital camcorders must be setup to output a signal through the i.LINK port prior to being connected to a computer. Consult the instruction manual of your camcorder for specific information. Instruction manuals are available in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
4. Ensure the video capture card and software are configured properly to receive the i.LINK signal from the camcorder.
IMPORTANT: For the computer to recognize an i.LINK connection from a MICROMV™ camcorder, MovieShaker™ software must be used.
NOTES:
* Depending on the video capture card and software you are using, you may need to manually configure the capture card and software to receive a signal from the i.LINK port. If applicable, check the Help files of the software or contact the video capture card or software manufacturer for further information.
* Sony® digital camcorders are not provided with and do not require special device drivers for i.LINK connectivity. The device drivers that allow i.LINK connectivity should be provided with the video capture software. If the software you are using does not appear to have the required drivers, you will need to contact the software manufacturer.
5. If the issue is still not resolved, try closing and reopening the video capture software.
6. If the issue is still not resolved, try using a different i.LINK cable or connecting to another i.LINK port or computer if available.
How to transfer video and still images from a camcorder to a computer using Audio/Video (A/V) cables.
IMPORTANT:
* The computer must have standard Audio/Video (A/V) input jacks [FIG. 1] and compatible video capture software (Sony® Vegas Movie Studio + DVD, Pinnacle® Studio Plus, Ulead VideoStudio®, etc.) to complete this procedure. Many video editing software applications include a capture function. If you have video editing software, most likely you will not need a separate video capture software application.
* The analog video capture card supplied in some Sony computers will support video capture using Sony video software such as VAIO Zone, Click to DVD™, and DVgate Plus™ only. If you are attempting to capture analog video to a Sony VAIO computer, additional information may be available. Click Change Model in the upper-righthand corner of the window and enter the model number of your VAIO computer, then search the Knowledge Base again for information specific to your computer.
* If model-specific information is required to complete any of the steps in this solution, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
1. Connect an A/V cable to the A/V output jack of the camcorder.
NOTES:
* If your camcorder has standard A/V output jacks , use standard A/V cables for the connection.
* If your camcorder has a mini A/V output jack , use an A/V cable with a mini connection on one end.
2. Connect the other end of the A/V cable to the A/V input jack on the computer.
3. Turn on the camcorder to the VCR, VTR or PLAYBACK mode.
4. Insert the cassette containing the video to transfer into camcorder.
5. Rewind the tape to the beginning of the video footage to be transferred.

===================
1: So ieee connection only works with the supplied program ... thats just crap .
2: Usb is useable ... as in plug n play ... provided device is disconnected correctly at all time's .
3: The computer must be off prior to the camera being powered on , and connected to the pc (when using av / ieee).
Rule number 3 most be strictly followed or damage to the device and/or pc may result .
