  1. hello,

i first burn with nero my project done with encoreDVD 1.51, with a verbatim dvd-r dl. the dvd was working perfectly on my jvc (xv-n50) but was not functionnal in a panasonic (dvd-s27) and a cambridge audio (dvd55), some button don't work, and player freeze or go elsewhere in the dvd, especially link into a chapter on a timeline. i redo (it was impossible to open the 1.51 project, i don't why) it with encoredvd 2.0 and i did the same thing (burn with nero, and a verbatim dvd-r dl). i got the same result (works perfectly in my jvc but menu freeze with the cambridge audio and the jvc).

i took the video_ts folder on my computer and puted in into dvd-shrink, to do a one layer dvd, it work's well. (even if there is around 25 menu and a lot of time line. no principal timeline, very "interactive", it gave 32 vob files..)

then, i reed and reed, here's what i understand:
    - it's better to burn the dvd directly with encoreDVD (because of the breaking point probably), and encore is compatible with +r dl only.

    - with writable dvdr, layers seems to be thinner than original dl, so people said on some forum that a maximum of 7mb/s sould be permit.

so i guest that burning a dvd+r at 7mb/s max should works. i will try that tomorow.

    but here is my question:

this dvd project is for printing, and 7mb/s max is not ideal for distribution.
so, because the dual layer video_ts folder generated by encore works (prooved by shrinking into a single layer dvd), i guest i could give this folder, or a .img, to the printing shop and their printed dvd should works perfectly? (because layer will not be thinner)

thanks a lot for reading (and for a possible answer), english is not my native language.

    regards,
    marc-antoine

Encore is not a great product. Lots of holes and problems along the way. Nero bites for dual layer burning.

Personally, I think you have been reading a load of old cobblers somewhere, because much of what you have here is bollocks, plain and simple.

You can encode up the maximum DVD spec, although it is always worth leaving a little overhead. I regularly encode up to 9400 + audio with no issues. I suspect the same people telling you about thin layers also warn people that the layers get thinner the more they are played because the laser burns some off every time it reads them.

Use ImgBurn2 to set the layer break and burn, or use PGCEdit to set the layer break and Imgburn 2 to burn. Either will give you much better results than you are getting now.

With that number of menus it sounds like a complex project. Make sure you do a lot of testing, even using small dummy video files so you can quickly burn test RWs to make sure the menus work. It may simply be too complex for Encore.

Finally, be aware that DL compatibility is still pretty low. Older machines may not play them at all, many machines will have problems playing them well. If compatibility across a wide range of machines is your goal, don't use DL. Either make your project fit DVD5s, or get your DLs pressed, not burned.

  3. hello,

yeah, the thinner theory seems weird but i reed it into a lot of place, anyway, you're probably right (dvdr producer must have quality standard in dvdr production i guest...).

it's because, i do this for work. the dvdr is mainly for the boss, to proove him it work and to do a disk he will be able to show to people he work with. in the worst case i can burn him a single layer disc (works perfect, thanks dvd shrink..)
but, for the pressing, they will do it double layer. so can i give them the 8gig video_ts folder? what happen with the layer beak?

    thank a lot,
    m-a
