  1. On this guide there is the following suggestion:
    http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/dv/guide.html
"save the DV file as either type-1 or as a type-2 AVI. Save the audio separately to a WAV file (your DV editing program should offer this option"

But the final AVI is only 1 file and no wave audio file is seem... it says my editing dv program should allow me to do this but it doesn't "STUDIO 9" so the question is how... I know I have to convert the WAV to AC3 for DVD NTSC so I need to do something about this...

Sure you can in Pinnacle Studio.

Import the DV file to the timeline. Then export as wav.

Or split the audio from the video and delete the video.

Many ways but I don't have Studio installed.

I use VirtualDub Mod. You will need a DV codec. I use the Panasonic DV Codec. Load the DV and in 'Streams>Stream List', Right click on the audio stream and select 'Full processing mode'. Then select 'Save WAV'. This will give you a WAV format audio file. You can filter or adjust this with the freeware Audacity audio editor if needed or just convert it to AC3 format audio with ffmpeggui. Very easy and fast.

Then when I author the files to DVD using TMPGEnc DVD Author, I add the newly encoded MPEG-2 video and the AC3 audio and let the authoring program mux them back together. Or you could mux the AC3 back in with VDM by using 'Add' in 'Streams'. Move the AC3 to the top of the list, then delete the original audio. This will not effect the original file. Then save with full audio processing for the audio and 'Direct stream processing' for the video. This is very quick, only a few minutes.

    Hi...

first how do you create your DV file.. is it Windows moviemaker or windv toghter with
your DV camera or a Canopus device using firewire....

If you use Canopus i strongly advice you to install there DV codec...
else i dont think you will need to install a DV codec....Virtualdub dont have the same
    problem as virtualdubMOD

(Canopus often sync the video with the audio)

tip: if you use interlaced video the field order is botton field fist BFF

capture the DV file in AVI 1 format... I have got sync problems with AVI2 format...

open the DV file with Virtualdub... (Not Virtualdub MOD)do your editing and save the audio as a wave file...

The wave file should be a 2ch 48kHz wave file if not you can convert it within the program...

I would use Quenc for the Dolby digital conversion (.ac3)

And for authoring the DVD i would use guifordvdauthor....

    All programs are freeware

    stars....

I use Studio 9 because it seems to be the most stable program for capturing DV and perhaps quality is better too... But I never tried WINDV neither moviemaker is there a special reason why I should change? You say me to install their codec from canopus? I didn't know there were different DV codecs, should I always use the codec from the manufacturer that capture device is from? you also tell me to use BFF for fieldorder if I'm going to use interlaced video but, I don't know if the video is interlaced or not? does canopus change that or that depends on the original video? and if is interlaced where do I change that to BBF are u talking about VD? I don't think studio 9 gives me those options...

Did you tell me to use DV type 1? but I wouldn't be able to edit it in VD if I do... Then the WAV do I convert it to Doly2.0 or 5.1? can a Wave have 5 channels? Oh and how good do you think Quenc is over AC3Machine doom9 prefer AC3Machine for corversions... Final for DVDauthoring I prefer DVDit! because is lonely any reason why I should use your suggestion over mine? if you say this because is freeware over expensive software dont' worry I can buy it if is worth it.

    1. The quality of the DV file is not set by what type of program och capturing card you are using. The standard
    datarate is 25 Mbit/s....

2.If you use canopus and are capturing very long movies (3h) from VHS, there is always a problem with the
sync of the video and audio. Because there are many dropped frames. The audio is almost always correct
there for they lock the video to the audios timeline... This is not DV standard so there for its better to use
Canopus DV codec together with its devices.....

    3. Almosr all video is interlaced Top field first (TFF) or botton field first (BFF). Some video are not interlaced
and they are called progressive. There is no rule if its TFF or BFF, but most certenly all captured and DV videos
are BFF...This is very IMPORTANT to know if you are going to encode the DV file into a mpeg2 file....
If you deinterlace the video (progressive) You will lose much quality in the final product. If you dont know what type of video you have use Gspot to get the info.

    4. I have sync problems with Avi type2 so there for I use Avi type 1...But if you want to use AVi type 2
together with the panasonic codec and VirtualdubMod so go ahead....I personally dont see any reason in it
when you can use VirtuallDub without the codec...VirtualDUB is the better program for DV files....VitualddubMOD is a moded version and works great with mpeg2 files...

5.Some DV cameras can record the audio in 44.1 kHz format. And if you want to use this audio in a
.ac3 file you must convert it into 48kHz format. Virtualdub does this perfect other programs "**** up"
    the timeline...
You can never get a 5.1 .ac3 out of a 2 ch wave file....Well you can get some type of 5.1 sound
by extracting the 5 mono wave files from the 2 ch file...If you are interesting in this do a search
at doom9.net...there is a nice guide there...

6.Well I dont know how good the AC3Machine is. But I do know if you have a 2ch 48kHz wave file
and encode it into .ac3 and uses a hight bitrate 256 it dosent matter what type of encoder you have....
So if you prefer the AC3Machine, use it.....

    7. I have been using DVDit for many years....and it has its limitations...
Maybee the later versions was abele to import .ac3 sound my crashed all the time (V2.54PE) and it costs
about 600 US....Guifordvdauthor is more advanced and flexible, maybe not plug and play as DVDit...
But if DVDit suits your needs use it.....

    stars.....

TMPEGnc Plus 2.5 converts the avi in to 2 streams (audio/video), for creating captured avis in to DVD.
