Video output darker / redder after cutting out segment & saving...

Hi all,

I was asked to cut out a 2 minute segment of a .avi for a professor of mine because it was deemed socially questionable in this day and age, but the rest of the movie is fine.

using virtualdubmod i set the selection start & end and cut out the past then saved using direct stream. The output file is lesser quality by virtue of a darker picture and more 'red'

was I supposed to do something else aswell?

... i guess nobody knows why the video quality would degrade...
