    Hi there!

I try to extract subs from DVD's, but ffmpeg does not create any .srt file. What am I missing here? I already tried 5 dvd's, select the desired subs, the format (.srt), but no .srt file is created...

When I try to create just the .srt file, it asks me to select encode video or audio...

    Any ideas?

    I'm on a macbook pro.

You must choose "Extract" under the subtitles options, not "Encode". If you've already understand that, i don't know.
Question: did you first extract the VIDEO_TS from the DVD's ?

Yes, I did got the Video_TS decrypted and copied to my HD.

I thought that encoding it would also extract the subs... I'm trying "Extract" now.

But one thing is not clear to me: ffmpeg does not do OCR, right? So how does it gets SRT files?

Also, a bit off-topic: if subtitles on DVD's are actually images, how come that you can change subs fonts on programs like mplayer?

    Cheers, and thanks for answering!

The subtitle extraction in ffmpegX gets .pgm image files from the subtitle stream, then performs OCR on those, then writes the results to .txt files, then joins those with time code in a .srt file and cleans up the temp files.

I managed now to extract the subs from some DVD's, but others, with no reason for that, don't show the subs after extraction. They do appear while watching the stream or on the preview, and VLC and mplayer acknowledge them, but nothing is shown... What may I been doing wrong?

    Cheers,

    Francis
