    Sorry, if this question been asked numerous times before, A friend of mine asked whether which quality of a video format has better quality, avi or MPEG? I tried using the SEARCH to no avail. Thanks in advance

    The question has no meaning as it stands. Done well, both can have excellent quality. Done badly, both can be terrible. It is also complicated by the fact that AVI is only a container. The codec determines how the video and audio is encoded within this container.

    So the question only starts to have meaning when you specify which codec you are using to create you avi, and under what conditions. Some AVI formats are better than mpeg when space is crucial and you need smaller files. Others are better when you need to do repeated encoding because they use lossless compression formats and therefore do not drop quality on successive encodes. These however, produce large files.

    If you are encoding for DVD then there is no competition - mpeg is the only allowable format.

    Ask you friend for specific questions and maybe he'll get meaningful answers.
