  1. The only thing Ive done so far is copy the dvd to my hard drive. The video does has audio but Id like to put music over the original audio. It doesnt matter if I can hear the original. The video is in a folder that has VOB, BUP, IFO files.

You would have to reauthor the DVD completely to replace the audio. There might be a utility that can do it without reauthoring, but it would be really complex.

    The basic steps are

    1. Demux the video and audio from the original DVD structure
    2. Encode your mp3 to DVD compliant audio
    3. Re-author with the original video and your new audio

If you want to keep your original menus etc then it becomes a lot more complex.

  4. would it be easier to use a vhs tape, instead of a dvd, and a camcorder to sync over the sound?

Honestly - probably not, and the quality would be much lower.

VOB2MPG or ReJig can demux the video and audio from your VOBs (free)

ffmpeggui can encode your MP3 to AC3 2.0 (free)

GUIforDVDAuthor can put it all back together again, ready for burning (free)

ImgBurn2 can burn it for you (free)

Your DVD is already an mpeg file, inside the VOB container. As pointed out above, VOB2MPG can extract it for you.

Perhaps, instead of dribbling out little bit of information every few posts you start again by telling us exactly what you have, what you need to do with it, and what output you need. I find it tiresome trying to guess what people want to do when they can't be up front about it.

Hi, I'm not the OP, but I want to do the same thing, more or less.

I have a DVD from a concert I performed that was shot, edited and authored by others, and I would like to edit it to 1.) make it shorter using selected clips,
2.) replace the audio with the superior audio from the master audio recording, so it needs to be synced up.

I would like to do this without re-encoding the video, and it seems possible based on all that I've read, but I am having a hard time getting my head around all this.

I did convert and edit and re-encode video using Vegas, and it's fine for making flash movies, but this quality is not good enough for DVD authoring. I will be quite satisfied to end up with a DVD without menus or any extras. Just so people can pop it into their DVD player and watch it.

    Any help?

    (Windows XP sp2, btw)

VOB2MPG to extract the mpeg files from the VOBs. VideoRedo or Womble Mpeg VCR to edit the video and add audio without re-encoding.

Caveat : Both of these editors are smart editor insofar as they do not re-encode video that has not changed. If you add text or filters, the video will have to be re-encoded. This includes even simple things like brightening the video.

FWIW, if you can't get quality out of Vegas you either have very bad source, or your aren't using it right. Vegas is quite capable of producing high quality output for DVD or other formats.

    Thanks guns1inger,

One question. If I use VOB2MPEG, import the mpg into Vegas, make a cut and delete everything on the timeline to its right, will Vegas have to re-render any of it? I guess I mean is it smart editor in that regard?

    thanks much for the assistance,

    Steve

Vegas (and Premiere and quite a few others) decompress the mpeg to the timeline before editing. This means they must re-encode the entire timeline when saving. Mpeg was not designed as an editing format, and requires special treatment in order to edit it correctly. Vegas/Premiere etc are designed to edit DV and similar formats, which were designed with editing as the primary concern.
