  1. I am trying to get windows media player 9 on my Windows 2000 laptop to play AVI movies. I have installed the 3ivx 4.5.1 codec which is a program that another program called Gspot said should play the avi movies but it is not doing so. In fact, after I installed the 3ivx codec, I couldn't even get windows media player to play the sound of the movie which it did before.

The avi movies run perfectly on my Windows XP desktop with Windows Media Player 10. But I think I can't use Media Player 10 on my laptop because I think 10 is not compatible with Windows 2000. And I can't install XP on the laptop because I only have 190 megs of ram, a 6 gig hard drive and only a 366mhz processor. So what can I do to get the avi movies to play with media player nine?

Personally, I would dump WMP9 and use a better program. VLC is one which will play about anything with no codecs to install. Or Media Player Classic which works similar to the Windows player without all the Windows 'baggage' that WMP brings with it. Both are freeware. You will need codecs with MPC.

  3. Thank you Redwudz,

I just downloaded VLC and will give it a try. Like the idea of not worrying about codecs.
