Not really. PSX was $299 when it came out. Sega Saturn was $400. 3DO was $700 and how well did that sell?

psx survived and it was way higher priced than n64. but the snes/genesis days were what $150?

saturn and 3do are a joke so you cant even compare lol.

and i dont understand why everybody is having a fit that they have to pay $600 for a blu ray player(ps3). quit qq'ing and go buy a dedicated blu ray player for $800-1200 that DOESNT play games. kthnx.

SNES was $200 (and with no moving parts, cd drives were more expensive then).

$300-$400 is a little expensive but doable if you don't want to wait. How can you not compare the PS3 to the 3DO? And people are not having a fit over paying $600 for a Blu-Ray player, they are having a fit over having to pay $600 for a VIDEO GAME SYSTEM. That is what a PS3 is. Sony just added the Blu-Ray out of pure greed.

because $700 in 93 is a hell of a difference from $600 in 2006/2007. if you look at the tech put into the ps3 alone its well worth the asking price $/performance ratio wise.

Sony dropped the price of the PSX to $200 right before the N64 launched (which was also $200).

But the comparison is still valid. The 3DO was better than anything else out at the time. That's something that we are led to believe about the PS3 although that still remains to be seen. The 360 is cheaper and appears to be better. The PS3 is still ridiculously over-priced compared to its competition (just as the 3DO was).

True that may come along as an alternative for future wii games - they may let you go back to normal. Though I don't know if they will.

The difference between the ps3 and the 3do is that the Playstation has legions of followers. 3do came out of nowhere at that high of a price. Although didn't they have arcade machines too??? So maybe they had a small following of arcarders but not a country full of people who know the name PLAYSTATION.

I think price will keep the playstation 3 from taking off super early. THough in the long run it may overtake the others once production ramps up. Only time will tell.

How much are the differences between the systems negligible and more an opinion? Your choice nowadays is largely going to be which unit plays more of the games you want to play.

From what I see in sales the HD-DVD is killing Blu-Ray in sales - adding it to the PS3 is an obvious marketing ploy.

And both systems failed miserably due to the price. Back in the day i WANTED a Neogeo, its 2D gaming power was amazing back then. But the colossal price tag easily nixed that possibleity.

I don't give a damn about blu-ray or HD-DVD. Microsoft made the right decision by not shoving its perferred media format down gamers throats with the 360. They gave gamers a choice if they want to buy the HD-DVD add-on, and in doing so kept the price of the 360 fairly reasonble.

Sony however wants its media format to win, and gamers who want a PS3 but don't care about blu-ray, are still forced to flip the bill to support sony's next-gen media format ambitions. Bahh.

True just pointing out it is not the most expensive ever both were also unknown console companies at the time Sony ist (there is the difference)

With the ps3 they are enouogh rich people with more money than sense that just gottta have it for their kids and die hards to probably support a ps3 it they made 600,000 on launch day they still would have sold out

i think Sony also liked the copy protection that the blueray provides since the recorders are not widely available (so no disk hacking yet gives them more time to hoard money) no one will be copying their games immediately unlike the xbox360 it took less than 4 months for the first hack

We will see what the future holds for the ps3
    I want a xbox360 right now though can't afford a ps3 at the moment
I entered a contest to win a free ps3 we'll see what happens with that also.

Well, I had gotten my first NES at Christmas of 1989. And I still have that console to this day and it works. I also still have my SNES, and N64 and I still have all my original games too. So with that in mind, there's really no need for me to buy the Wii though I did see a demo of it at a Best Buy store.

As for the PS3, that console is quite large! As with most first generation consoles there's bound to be bus and errors on first release. To be honest, I would have never considered the Playstation at all if it wasnt for the Final Fantasy series moving to the PS from Nintendo. FF7 was the reason I bought my PSX, and at that time it was $149 for just the system.

Will I buy a PS3? No doubt I will, but not until sometime in the next year when more of them are available. When I buy a console its mainly dependent on replay value and the kind of games that I am into. Graphics are only a plus. I never buy consoles at launch because of the animals that went crazy when the PS3 was launched. Truly pathetic....its just a game console. Also because of the fact that I've been reading about FF XIII possibly coming to the PS3, that is definitely going to be on my 'going to buy' list.
I have the staff of power, now it's up to me to use it to its full potential to command my life and be successful.
