The JCPenney Outlet store in my area has on sale right now the Philips 622/37 ( DVD622 37 ) for ~ $ 25

I know the saying that you get what you pay for, but every now and then there is an exception to that rule.

The reviews that I've been able to find for this player seem to be all over the place:

What concerns me about the quality (or lack thereof) in general about Philips brand dvd players are the comments in the amazon.com customer review section for the Philips 642:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/B000204SWE/ref=cm_cr_dp_2_1/105-5407...nDate&n=172282
(e.g., comments about the 642 failing after 1 year or after only 3 to 6 months, comments about the 642 player locking up/dying with the dvd trapped inside, and comments about the 642 running hot -- does the 622/37 run hot ?)

For $ 25 if the 622/37 dvd player manages to work well for at least a year, that seems like an acceptable situation. I'd be grateful if some people could comment, please, on their experience(s) with this particular model. Thank you!

I can't comment on the 622, but I can tell you that my 642 is awesome and I've had it for two years, under very heavy use. Knock on wood. It plays just about everything and is one of the most popular players on the market. My only gripe is that the video quality is not the best, though I've heard more recent versions of Philips players (the 642 is an old model) are fine. HTH.

If upconversion, Divx, or the ability to play MP3s off of a DVD rather than just a CD are not of interest to you, the 622 looks good, from the specs. For the most part, that's what separates the 622/37 from the more-expensive players on the market.
