  2. YOU NEED A NEW BURNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Since you have a newer drive which is 3 days old with the newest firmware....the first thing I would do is to STOP burning at 2X, that's TOO slow for these high speed burners. If you're using 8X media, I wouldn't burn those any slower than 4X or any faster than 8X. If you're using 16X rated media, I would burn those at 8X min./16 max.

If that doesn't work try different media, preferrably TY.

If you end up needing a new burner, I would go with Pioneer or NEC.

16x media can be burned at 1x, if the write strategy is appropriate for that media at 1x. If the write stategy for that media is not in the firmware, even a 1x write can be unsuccessful - the drive may default to an incompatible write strategy.

Amen to that! One of the biggest reasons that people with older burners have problems with newer media is that the media came out long after the drive was released. As a result, the drive doesn't recognize the MID on the newer media. So the burner has to take a blind stab at the write strategy, which is usually a poor strategy. The drive manufacturers are extremely remiss in providing firmware updates that include support for newer media. What's the practical answer? Buy a new burner.

Some drive manufacturers are far worse than other manufacturers. After being accused of prejudice in my attitude to drive makers, I'll refrain from naming the worst offenders.

I will point out that many factory assembled computer systems include drive firmware in their automatic updates, eliminating a task for their users which roll-your-own system owners must assume for themselves.
