So I've got some movies in divx / xvid / avi format, and they all have .srt files for them. I use Nero to burn them as a "data disc" so it works in my dvd player (philips dvp-642). Problem is, when I burn the video and the .srt file, there are no subtitles when I hit play.
I've tried the Virtual Dub / VobSub programs, but for whatever reason they don't work. Is there any other way I can get subtitles? (preferrably embedded)

  2. I have the same problem with my player. The model is: Sony DVP-NS63P and i don't find the solution yet.

Try to upgrade the firmware. Maybe it is the solution for this problem. Searching over the internet, many problems with subtitles and AVI files are solved with firmware upgrade.

    Good luck.

  3. ...there are no subtitles when I hit play.

At the risk of stating the obvious, have you tried hitting the Subtitle button on the remote after the movie has started playing? Because according to some of the comments in the database, it does play subs:

    So does the Sony:
Although it plays divx and xvid formats and .sub, .txt and .srt subtitles...

I haven't updated the firmware since I can't find any upgrade for it.
And hitting the subtitle button after it starts playing doesn't work.

  7. 642 requires that you SELECT subtitles from your menu, push subtitle button, & then you select your avi file & push play.

Left column: dvd players for tons of tricks for this player.

If you got a 5960/5940 it would do this automatically & play other sub formats.
