The movie size is too big to fit a 4.5GB disc even the compression setting has been set to the Automatic. So I would like to copy the movie into an external hard drive first and later copy to the DVD DL disc. But, I could not see such an option in the DVD Shrink32. Can anyone tell me how to select the external hard drive as a destination to copy the movie into there wiith the DVD Shrink32? Thank you for your answer.

If you plan on copying it to a dual layer disc I suggest you use DVD Decrypter to rip the disc to an ISO/MDS file, you can then burn that file with DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn (updated DVD Decrypter without ripping ability).

I still wonder how I can copy a dvd movie into an external hard drive (just like burn it into a disc) so that I can either watch it in my computer or make a DVD disc later? Does anyone know it?

If you wanted to copy the entire DVD, then the method lumis suggests will work, as long as it doesn't have one of the newest encryptions.

If you wanted to run it through Shrink and copy it, when you click 'Backup!', you will have a new window. Click on 'Target Device' and change 'Select backup target:' to 'Hard Disk Folder', then set the 'Select target folder for DVD output files' to your external hard drive. As long as you don't have a blank DVD in there, it can't burn. This should put the Shrink output on your external drive.

BTW, a DVD-5 actually holds about 4.37GB, not 4.5. See 'WHAT IS' DVD to the upper left. <<<<<<

This happened to me once and I wasn't too concerned with quality as it was just a sports DVD so what I did was run the ISO through DVDShrink and created a smaller ISO. Then I ran that ISO through DVDShrink to get a "second pass" compression.

Depending on your source you may find the results acceptable.
