  1. So far I've tried:
    • XMPEG
    • AVI.Net
    • AutoGK
    • SimpleDivx
XMPEG gave a crappy result, and I can't install all the components of avi.NET and AutoGK (don't ask why). SimpleDivX gives a superb result, but there's a bug with detecting the correct length of the actual movie, which makes the file larger or smaller than the goal.

Until the bug in SimpleDivX gets fixed: is there a program out there I haven't tried?

    Try also FairUse Wizard.

Have you installed .net framework? it is required for avi.net.

  3. I forgot that one - didn't work either. And yeah, I think .net framework is installed.

I've also tried DVDFab Platinum which gave a nice result, but the sound was 2 seconds out of sync in the end.

Ditto. Avi.net & AutoGK are the best tools I've tried - And I can't decide which is best.

  6. I just tried FairUse Wizard again, and it gave me a pretty good result, but I think it can get better?

I don't know how to set up the XviD codec (1st and 2nd pass) could you post your settings?

How can we offer any assistance if we don't ask exactly what went wrong with the installs ?

Personally I use AutoGK and I have tried all rest that are out there.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Then you don't stand a chance beating FU, AGK or avi.net. Me think you have to be very good at configuring the codecs to get better results.

  9. I managed to install AutoGK on another computer, but I don't think that it's better than other programs. See for yourself.

    AutoGK

    FairUse Wizard

    DVDFab Platinum

If I scale the original movie to the same as the ripped, then it's pretty close, but if I go full screen, the quality drops a lot, compared to other rips that I've seen.

    Any comments on the quality?

Same bitrate in all samples? DVDFab Platinum looks best to me of these screen shots. Tried avi.net?

acutally to me AutoGK looks the best.. look at the knuckle on the thumb there.. in all three images.. DVDFab has "blocks" on the skin of the hand then it improves w/ Fairuse but it's still present and w/ AutoGK it's barely noticible that there's any blockiness. I personally use VituralDubMod to encode my Xvid files and I only run them on a Single Pass w/ the Profile set to DXN HT NTSC bitrate varies though. I also extract the wav out of the dvd and encode it to a 48000Hz 128Bit MP3 then i mix the audio and video after compression of each by doing a Direct Stream Copy and saving as an AVI.
