  1. I heard somewhere that some connectors (composite, s-vidéo, yuv, dvi, hdmi) have a limited resolution support.

Here's a list of the most popular connectors with
with their (supposed) maximum resolution (tell me if i'm wrong) :

Composite : 380i (maybe 220i, but it seems to be a small value...)
    SVideo : 400i
    YUV : 480i
    HDMI : 1080i
    DVI : 2400I

    Thanks for your help guys.

For analog standards do you mean the maximum digital resolution you can capture from a maximum quality analog signal or do you mean typical resolution values from typical consumer sources? For analog, "studio" quality is near double what we see at home.

    Analog:

    Composite PAL or NTSC:
    ------------------------------
    VHS: ~352x480/576i
    Studio: ~800x480/576i

    S-Video: PAL or NTSC
    ------------------------------
    S-VHS: ~450x480/576i
    Studio: ~800x480/576i

    YUV : 720x480i, 720x576i, 1280x720p, 1920x1080i plus 1080p in studio
    VGA: Computer "Vesa" resolutions.

    Digital:

    DVI-D: 480i, 576i, 720p, 1080i plus all the computer "Vesa" resolutions
    HDMI : 480i, 576i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p
    Serial Digital: 480i, 576i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 2kx4k, 4kx4k

Resolution is only one measure of video picture quality. Signal to noise and bit depth are also important.
