Ok, here is the problem. My dvd player is a Philips 642. Great machine, plays pretty much everything I throw at it. It supports Divx and Xvid files. I downloaded a couple episodes of a favorite show that were encoded in a format that my player doesnt support (extension mp4).

I am using River Past Video Cleaner 6.11. Whether I convert the file to Divx (divx 6.4.0) or Xvid (xvidcore 1.1.0), the files just wont play on my dvd player. I can load and play them in various players in windows, by changing the extension to AVI. I've tried changing the extension to .avi and loading them on discs and still no go.

I have resorted to using dvd-rw and cd-rw discs during these trials cause i've been burning through stacks of discs. the dvd-rw and cd-rw will play downloaded episodes that have been encoded with divx or xvid by someone else just fine.

Am I missing a crucial step to ensure compatibility with my player? or just a crucial setting? I got a file to load yesterday but it would only play 2 seconds of it. Any advice appreciated.

  2. Try pressing the "Load Defaults" button at the bottom of the main Xvid config dialog. That will get you settings that should play on your Divx/DVD player.

Be sure you aren't using AAC audio (usually found in MP4 files). The DVP 642 can't play that. Reencode to MP3 instead.

Thanks, I will try that right now.

Should I manually change the extension to .avi or should be ok with the extension the program tags on during the conversion? I've noticed it adds .divx or .xvid to the filename. I didnt think it would matter, but it might.

You can go to the DVD Players section to the left and download the DivXTestCD. That will show you which files actually play on your player.

You can also open the files in a program such as gSpot. Post a screen shot of the gspot screen and someone will be able to point out what is wrong.

The biggest thing to watch for is QPEL and GMC, the 642 won't play files encoded using those.
