Hi, I'm new to making/editing video.

I really want to start making fan videos (clips from my fav TV shows with music)

I know how to make a sideshow with music in Movie Maker but I really want to know how to make clips from my DVDs and .AVI files.

I have tried opening my avi's in Animation shop and Windows Movie Maker but no luck.

Does anyone know of a good program or tutorial that could help me?

Ulead Video Studio might be a good place to start. It's interface is closer to WMM than most NLEs. Alternatively, Vegas Movie Studio and Premiere Elements are powerful beginner level editors.

For AVI type video and if you wanted to end up with AVI type video, say from a DVD, VirtualDub Mod is fairly easy to use. It can edit VOBs from a DVD or most AVI type format with the proper codecs installed. There are lots of guides for it. https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Virtualdub Just look to the bottom of the page. Those VD guides will work with VD Mod also, or it has specific ones for it listed. The downside of VD Mod is that it only outputs AVI type video.

If you want to stay in MPEG format, VideoReDO, MPEG-VCR or most any MPEG editor will do what you want. There are a few freeware ones also in our MPEG editors tool page: https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=107#107 TMPGEnc encoder can also do some simple MPEG editing. If you wanted to extract the whole DVD to a MPEG file for editing, VOB2MPEG is freeware.

Most tools listed in our 'Tools' section have guides associated with them near the bottom of their page. There is also a guide section for 'EDIT' to the left with more guides. <<<<<<

    And welcome to our forums.
