I haven't converted AVI files, but this works well for MPEG files. It's twice as fast as Videora iPod Converter. It's more user friendly, too.

    http://www.adstech.com/products/RDX-160/specifications/RDX-160_spec.asp?pid=RDX-160

    Compatible Formats:
Most standard video files that you can play on your PC
    MPEG-1
    MPEG-2
    VOB (unprotected)
    DivX
    Quicktime Movie
Some people might suggest a program called SUPER. Be sure to check this post, though.

Though, that's really only an issue if you're using more than one Cygwin-related program. (Actually, I've used more than one on a system with SUPER installed, and haven't had any noticable problems. Your mileage may vary.)

BTW, I just tried the InstantVideo To-Go with an avi file without any problems. Once again, Instant Video To-Go is twice as fast as Videora iPod Converter, and about three times as fast as SUPER. IMO, the quality is better too.
