i can call as definitive "proove".I think Mats has given us a perfectly designed and executed challenge.
cool, you got my words!we as individuals, using just our ears to judge, could discerne which was which.
@ Mats too
depend of how much the person can hear and this is individual, the results of the poll depend of this factor. But is it a significant quality loss, or just of academic interest?
i'm against to give hints but...it will be unlistenable...(Just don't try to sell it to someone who can hear the diference.)
listen the b.wav.
after they scream "thunder" the volume decrease comparing with a.wav!
then...no matter who is who because have differences,right?...
in differents words: if i (or you) hear differences...have differences!
right or wrong? ( you can hear or not? ) :P
best regards!
edit: it takes to the question: why b.wav decrease the sound? (if you can hear it)

We should not able to hear any differences, becuase electronics music is not natural.
Please try simple singing with voice, or simple single musical instrument like piano. -
We should not able to hear any differences...
of course, different kind of music will be easy!(you're completely right)

I think B has slightly less dynamic range and may be the AC3 compressed MP3 (that's my vote). But I have 46 year old ears that have been subjected to "some" stress over those years and are certainly not the pristine instruments they used to be. I can tell there's a difference, but which is which is a best guess. In any case, in casual listening, without one file to reference against the other, it's probably a moot point. Both sound "good enough" for me. Nice challenge!

Raquete (among others) is quite right. A is the source, and B is A reencoded to AC3
