  1. When I try to preview a *.avi in VirtualDub, I get a: "error decompressing video frame 0" ( error code -100 ) I can play the avi in any player I have installed. Gspot says I have 6 video codecs installed, and 7 audio codecs installed. VirtualDub uses a XviD MPEG-4 codec decompresssor. ( under file>information ). I'm trying to frameserve it to TMPGEnc. Anyone??? TIA

Does VirtualDub list the 'XviD MPEG-4 Codec' in 'Video>Compression'? If not, then it's not entirely installed. Or VD is corrupted somehow. Try VD Mod. It handles a few more formats. If you get nowhere, you might uninstall the Xvid codec, then reinstall it. I suspicion you may have a conflicting codec, though. This would be more common with codec pack installs.

Which version of Xvid do you have installed? (Also, just because I'm curious, which version of GSpot?)

  4. Yep VirtualDub does list the XviD MPEG-4 decoder, from Jan 3 2003. Core Version 2.1; and no VirtualMod can't play the *avi's either, but return the same error. GSPOT is version 2.21 build 030711. How do you uninstall the XviD codec?

Sounds like one of the old 1.0 or 1.1 builds of Xvid. I'm not sure which version it is, exactly; the 'Core Version' is misleading and doesn't refer to the overall version (and I think it was used in a number of the 1.0/1.1 builds). The latest version of Xvid is more or less 1.2 (though the Xvid page in VideoHelp's Tools section has a recently-released patch to 1.1.1 (1.1.2) listed as the latest version. You can try either, I believe, whichever you prefer. ) The newer versions might fix the 'frame 0' problem you're having.

Normally, Xvid should have an entry in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. It's probably a good idea, even if you're going to install a newer version, to go ahead and uninstall Xvid anyway, before installing the new version.

You might try the newest version of GSpot (2.60 RC1, as I'm typing this) - versions 2.52 and higher provide quite a bit more information about videos than 2.21 and more formats.

  6. THX to both of you. Uninstalling the codec, and installing it again did the trick. And then I installed Gspot 2.60, which you are right, brings me a lot more information. THX once again.
