I followed the VideoHelp guide for cutting avis using VirtualDub MP3 Freeze, but the procedure produced an avi with truncated audio. To confirm this problem I just loaded and saved an avi and sure enough the audio is truncated. I had to use MP3 Freeze because of the VBR issue. Is there a version of MP3 Freeze that has this bug fixed or is there another workaround? Thanks in advance.

try virtualdubmod instead. just select no if it wants to rewrite the header.

It is broken too. I have an avi of 14248 frames. I want to trim only the first 8. This does not work. Any attempt to perform a range operation (delete, save to file, etc.) when the start marker is less than 64 but not at the beginning fails. So trying to save frames 9-14247 results in a copy of the original (the start marker is ignored). The lowest frame number for which the biggest possible save works is 64, i.e. saving frames 64-14247 works. Of course this doesn't help in any way since the overlap I'm trying to correct is less than 64 frames. I did find out the significance of frame 64, this is the first keyframe. As I'm not a video guru knowing this doesn't help me. Not sure if it would help anyone solve this problem.

I'm almost out of ideas. None of the cutting/trimming suggestions work. If there is a way to play an avi in reverse I might be able to use the mplayer/mencoder -frames option to trim the beginning.

I found the Nicky's appendix on keyframes which explains the subject nicely. That is indeed the problem I'm running into. VirtualDub & VirtualDubMod won't allow a cut that's not at a keyframe. So I need to find a way to insert a keyframe where I want to cut.

Success! The trick is to reencode the frame range covering the cut point using mencoder with "-lavcopts keyint=0". This forces every frame to be a keyframe (Iframe). When every frame is a keyframe a cut can be made at any frame with VirtualDubMod.
