    Hey guys,

i need to back up some UK dvds to take with me to the US but the regions are different. Does anyone know of any software that will convert my discs so that they will play in an american dvd player?

    Thanks

  2. Another option is to get a cheap DVD player that you can region hack.

I did that because my mum collected a bunch of free BBC comedy DVDs from the Daily Mail for me. I got a $29 DVD player, found the region hack and that was that!

It can easily be done by three pieces of freeware and three folders for each rendering step. This assumes that these software can go over the copy protection. DVD Decrypter to rip the files to the hard drive into folder 1. Then use VobBlanker to change the attributes of the VOB files from PAL to NTSC. Render into Folder 2. Then use DVD Shrink to re-render the files in Folder 2 to burn a DVD. The process takes about 30-40 minutes, about 10-15 minutes each step. It doesn't get any easier.

The only problem I had is that the menu might have to be accessed from the remote control. Other than that, it's like the original PAL DVD.

I have a Cyberhome 300S and a Philips DVP 642. It's my overseas PAL DVDs that I'm converting for someone who has an old DVD player that doesn't even support VCDs!

But like anything else, there's no guarantee that such will work in all players. But if you have to convert, this will do it about as quickly and simply as anything else.

I tried to use Nero Vision 4 and I couldn't get the subtitles and menus at all. Also, it took over 3 hours. The above method just had to access the menus with the DVD remote control. The total time is about 30-45 minues, depending.

I tried. My friend doesn't want a new DVD player. I tried to explain it would make my job easier. It's not just about DVDs. I have movies in all sorts of formats: VCDs, DivX, Xvid, etc. I wanted to get her a Philips DVP 642 for $40. She wouldn't accept it. I use AnyDVD and Nero Recode to copy DVDs. Much faster.

I've been buying NTSC DVDs in the States and playing them on my European Sony DVD player and TV with no problem. Is there meant to be a problem? Sorry for the hijack (and the TV cost 150 euros so it is not fancy!)

No there isn't. A vast majority of all PAL equipment handles NTSC too. Problems arise when trying to play PAL on NTSC equipment.

A lot of the US sold DVD players won't support PAL disks. I guess the theory being that Region 1 disks should be NTSC!

But the point is to then hack it to make it region free.

It's not because the disks are PAL that they won't play, it's because there aren't Region 1.

I would expect almost every DVD player out there will play NTSC and PAL, as long as the Region Code is right.

Personally, I'd insist that your friend accept the offer a free, cheapo player. I certainly wouldn't waste hours and hours converting disks. I mean, a hackable DVD player for less than $30. Good grief, Charlie Brown.
