  1. When I run Sherlock Codec Utility I get:
"Warning: The following codecs were found broken:
    Video Codecs:
    1. DivX MPEG-4 DVD Video Decompressor () Click on the respective codecs to see more info."

That 'more info' doesn't help me, but may be of use to the experts here:
    ---------
    Codec Name AVI Decompressor
    Driver C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\quartz.dll
    Codec Version 6.05.1.907
    Four CC Code
    Last Modified 30-Aug-2005 09:14:00
    Company Name Microsoft Corporation
    Description DirectShow Runtime.
    ---------

I don't work with MPEG-4 files in the course of making home DVDs, but I'd like to fix it, so I downloaded an example. That plays OK in:
    - Quicktime (default associated application)
    - Nero ShowTime
    - MPlayer for Windows (MPUI version).

    It doesn't play in:
WMP 10 ("The source filter for this file could not be loaded."; I believe WMP doesn't support MP4?)
PowerDVD 5 (No messages, just nothing.)

GSpot says "Codec: mp4v, Name: MPEG-4, Status :Codec Status Undetermined"

Is the reason that it plays in some but not others because the successful ones try VFW types as well as Direct Show?

Assuming it really is 'broken', what is the recommended way to fix this please?

Koepis xvid codec should be able to handle files with the mp4v fourcc. and try google for mp4v.

I don't know anything about the quartz.dll report.

And this is more a software playing issue than advanced converting. Moving you.

From recollection Xvid has some issues decoding videos from mp4. Strictly speaking there is no fourCC (MPEG-4 video is stored natively in mp4), that is just what the splitter passes, speaking of which you would need an mp4 splitter installed before the decoder even matters.

If DivX is broken, I would suggest re-installing it. Not sure if DivX handles mp4v or not anyway. Certainly it doesn't include an mp4 parser.

  4. Thanks. I'll try re-installing DivX as a first step.
