I just bought a panasonic 50' plasma TH-50PX60U. I want to hook up my comcast motorola HD-DVR box model DCT6412/2006 the best way. I dont know if I am using an HDMI. I also dont know if I need to update the firmware or get the newest updated box from comcast.

Comcast should give you a choice of HDMI or Analog Component cables. Use HDMI if they give you the option. Easier in many ways.

That TV has 1,366x768 native resolution. Experiment with 1080i and 720p as primary cable box output. Use which looks better to you.

Set box to 16:9, HDMI, 1080i or 720p and 4:3 override to 480p

Firmware updates download automatically. If you are having problems call them. They can take control of the box from their end or force a hard reset.

New question. All is see on the back of the cable box is a DVI connection. Should I use a DVI cord? Or should I get the DVI to HDMI converter and a HDMI cord? Would the picture be that much better?

Comcast 6412's come with either DVI or HDMI. Ask Comcast for a DVI to HDMI cable (assuming you have HDMI on the TV). They owe you the cable as part of the deal.

DVI out carries no audio so you will need to run audio cables separately. AC-3 5.1 is only on the orange coax and optical port.

Thanx again. What would be the benefit of networking my cable box with my computer?

Although there is an Ethernet port, it is currently inactive.

On your computer? It will be in a sizable window.

Start using these boxes and it will become clear. Experiment.
