You can crop off the sides, similar to the 'pan and scan' they do when they convert a movie to TV format. Depending on the video format, you could use VirtualDub or TMPGEnc encoder it it were a AVI type format or a MPEG.

Or you could resize it if your player can accept other framesizes. You may have to resize it anyway to make it fit after cropping.

    Yes, it's a secret.

It does take a bit of studying, unfortunately. But, you could convert the whole DVD to a large MPEG file with VOB2MPG, then do your edit/crop/resize. Or you could use VirtualDub Mod and drop in one of the VOBs that has the video clip you want and save it out as a format that your phone can play, along with crop/resize.

A lot depends on what format your phone uses for video. Or you could output from VD Mod in a lower compression format to preserve quality and use a program like SUPER that may very likely be able to produce a video your phone can play.

BTW, those are all freeware programs.

    Hi....

If you want to use virtualdubmod for resizing the widescreen the picture will look a bit strange...

the blackbars wont show up in the preview window because the video picture has the format 720x576 (PAL)
or 720x480 (NTSC). You must know the aspect ration of the video ex 2.40:1 ,2.35:1, 1.85:1 or 1.78:1...
and resize the video into the right format...

    2.40.....720x300
    2.35......720x306
    1.85......720*389
    1.78......720x404

After that you must resize the video into the format which your phone will accept...

    stars.....

Unlikely it matters if the aim is to crop video, the most important thing here is to keep the correct displayed aspect ratio at cropping and resizing. The ways will be different for DVD- and avi- sourced videos.
1.If the source video is square-pixelled (avi) and the aspect ratio is correct, then it should be cropped to target displayed aspect ratio (e.g. 4:3), of course if the video had horisontal borders, they should be cropped first. Then it can be resized:
a)keeping AR if the target format is avi,
b)to 720x576 if the target is PAL DVD, for further MPEG encoding.

2.If the video is from DVD it should be resized first to 16:9 displayed aspect ratio, then borders (if there are any) cropped, then the side parts of video cropped to get target AR and then the video resized to target size as above.
