  1. Hi
I burned some of my mpeg files to a cdr, then erased them..
but later I found out that cd has a badsector (or something like that)

There is a bad sector on a video for about 1 second..
When i try to copy the video to my hd,it gives me an error when it comes to that point
same as watching the video from cd..
Its ok untill it comes to that time,.than it locks up
but when I skip that second..its ok

Does anyone know how to save that file ? I tried saving it in dos..it saved the file untill that second but stopped there (In windows,I cant even save it till that bad second)

That sucks, I've had it before too. Here's how I fix it...

Grab CDRWin (www.goldenhawk.com) and install it.

Use its "Extract Disc/Tracks/Sectors" option with the bad disc in your BURNER (not a regular cd-rom drive); Set its "Error Recovery" option to "Abort" and change the "Read Retry Count" to 3 or 4. Finally, and the most important part, set the "Data Speed" to 1x.

It will take awhile to read the CD, but reading it at 1x speed and the fact that it is in your burner (which are better for error recovery than regular cd-rom drives) _should_ help you to recover the bad sector to a .bin/.cue file.

If CDRWin reads the entire CD and does not report any errors, then simply reburn the image to another CD and your done

    Good luck!

Theoretically, it should work with any disc. It's the fact that the data is being read at 1x in a burner, versus 40x in a regular cd-rom drive that increases the chance of a successful recovery. Afterall, you need only be successful once at reading the disc to recover data. And CDRWin's ability to "retry" X number of times is a bonus.

Though I've never tried it with a RW myself - usually with a bad RW burn, I'll do a full-erase (versus a quick-erase) and try again. If that doesn't work, I add the RW disc to my stack of coasters and move on to the next one

  5. Don't laugh at this, because I've gotten it to work many times. If the bad sector is really just a scratch, etc, then spray the cd with household furniture polish. I use the kind in an aerosol type can I bought at Smart and Final. Then wipe it off from the center to the edge with a lint free cloth. A kitchen paper towell will do in a pinch. I've been able to get data off Cd's that had visible scratch marks and where unreadable in any cd-rom. This should work on badly scratched audio cd's.

  6. Hi,

Another way of going about, would be to get your hands on BlindRead v2.x. The version 3 is no good for this. BlindRead 2 can extract files, version 3 creates complete images. Just rip the file you need from the cd to a place on your hd. BlindRead wil read everything ! If there are error, that not a problem, it wil copy the file with the errors, but at least it gets copied !

this could be the start of an interesting thread, "How Tall Is Your Stack of Coasters?"

i would have to say that mine is about 2 - 2.5 inches high...
