how to add more subtitels?

i whant to now how to add more then one subtitels to a movie whit

Only way i know with VirtualDub is to add hard subtitles, and I'd advise against adding more than one hard subtitle, even if I suspect it's possible by adding the subtitle filter several times...

No need to have multiple subtitle filters, just have all the subtitles in a single .ssa file (which can be done with any decent subtitle editor).

I imagined dvdsub meant he wants to add subtitle files in different languages, rather than adding more than one line. I may be wrong tho...

Sure, that's why I meant too. You just combine them into a single file. Without any further formatting, they'll be shown one above the other whenever they are displayed at the same time (not overwriting each other, don't worry). Of course, it's better to define two different styles for use with two different languages, so that one set of subtitles will appear at the bottom of the picture and the other at the top, or something like that, that's why I mentioned using an .ssa file.

OK! I get it. Yes, that'd work with ssa, as ssa lines (IIRC) in contrast to .srt doesn't have to come in the order they're shown.
But then again, I have a feeling the OP want selectable subs.

Selectable subs with VirtualDub? I don't think you can do that, at least with AVI files.
Though he didn't mention what kind of files he's using. Maybe they're .mkv, as VDM will open those. If that's the case, better use the proper MKV tools to add subtitles. VDM has limited capabilities when it comes to Matroska files containing subtitles.

Hi All... I'm Very NEW to this, but will read the forums for help with my projects--

whole thing to dvd (with Apollo DivX-to-DVD Creator) where the subs can be selectable for either language.

I don't want the subs to appear at the top
of the movie, since that would be too distracting.
For this project, I'll also use AVIReComp
to permanently embed the subs to the movie...
(I'm exhausted from doing this by hand
using Windows Movie Maker 2)

...this will take me some trial-n-error before I get it done right; but, my final goal is to have several dvds made for my
relatives and friends according to their
native language, so that I won't have to
repeat the entire process for each dvd I make.

I don't mind translating subtitles between
English and Spanish with Sub Station Alpha.
It just kills me when it comes to exhaustive
attempts to Permanently embed the subs
into the movie so they'll appear onscreen when the dvd is played back in a standalone dvdplayer.

Reading these forums give me new ideas
to try.

If you are creating DVDs then the problem is easy to resolve. DVD Lab Pro supports up to 8 subtitles per movie, so you can just make one DVD with several languages and let them pick which one. You can even create a subtitle menu to make it easy for them.

For AVI files for stand-alones look at the .sub / .idx format, which many players read and which supports multiple languages.

If I read this correctly (That you have AVI video that you want to convert and author as Video DVD) your idea of how to handle the subtitles is backwards. The subtitles for a Video DVD enters at the authoring stage. So, convert (if necessary) the subtitles you have to a format your authoring app can handle, encode AVI video to DVD compliant mpg, and finally author mpg + subtitles together (and maybe create a menu or 2).

Thanks guys... I see what you mean.

The avi would first have to be encoded to DVD compliant mpeg
(I use Arcsoft Showbiz to do that-
but have tried it with an XviD avi,
resulting in "chipmunk" voices in the audio.)

I'll print both of your suggestions
on paper so I can follow carefully
as I work this.
I'll also try DVD Lab Pro, and see
what that does.

DVD-Lab Pro is a good choice - but it just authors. It can import .srt subtitles among other formats. For AVI to DVD mpg, take a look at the more common encoders like TMPGEnc, CCE, Procoder, HCEnc et cetera. Your chipmunk audio problem is surely due to some (to ShowBiz) odd audio format. Also, audio is often best treated separately from the video, and just like subtitles brought together with video during the authoring stage.

A couple years ago I didn't have this problem. I'd Decrypt a disc, then open the vobs in Showbiz and convert them to mpgs,
then gather the mpegs and use Showbiz to
create/burn them straight to a blank disc.
(But then, I wasn't dealing with subs nor
Xvids at that time).

I'll try Cinema Craft Encoder and TMPGEnc,
for my avi's, and see what happens.
I'm not lookin for a "Quick-One-Click" solution to subbing my movies; I'd rather
spend the time doing it Right so that when
my kins receive their dvds for Christmas
they don't get "Chipmunked" at the other end.
