    So I ask this question.

How do I get the stupid little chirp out of
the audio when encoding to vcd?

    I am using ffmpeg mpeg1, 352x240, 1150 kbps, 29.97 fps, no crop
    The standard vcd settings.

    audio codec mp2
    bitrate 224
    sampling 44100
    channels stereo
    mode cbr

    ffmpeg options checked "high quality"

Using mac mini os x tiger

VCDs have minimal error correction, so if intermittent chirps are showing up only when you playback the VCD, but not when playing the file from your HD, then your problem is a poorly burned disc. Reburn, possibly with better media.

If you're hearing these chirps even before you burn a disc, but they aren't present in the original sourcefile, then it's possible that the source doesn't quite conform to specs. Demux, then separately transcode the audio using a different tool, then see what happens.
