  1. Hi all,

    I'm looking for a device (preferably USB) that will allow me to see tv on my laptop and convert my old analog videos into digital. So far from what I've been able to see the devices on the market either do one or the other.

  2. Here is how I do it using the Hauppauge WinTV USB2.0 PVR.

    (source VHS, cable. DVD) --> home theater --> monitor out --> Hauppauge -->
    computer(USB) --> WinTV2000

    Use WOMBLE to edit the MPG files. TMPGenc DVD Author 1.6 to make DVDs.

  4. I think the quality is excellent. there is nothing like HW encoding for quality.

    No, by HW encoding, he is referring to HardWare encoding. In other words, the actual conversion from analogue to digital video is done by a dedicated encoding chip on the device rather than relying on the computer CPU to do the work. The Hauppauge devices all use a hardware encoding chipset but so do others, it isn't unique to the one manufacturer.
