First of all, your script is the best thing ever. So thanks for creating it. I've got a question.

I used MP3Gain on all my mp3 files and set them to 95db. Is it possible, since the script includes MP3Gain, to set the volume of my avi files to the same volume, i.e. 95 db?

Soopafresh, thanks for your script. It is really great. I was looking for a tool like this for years.
Is there anyway to create the output as xVid instead of Divx.?

I think I have a beta version of the script that will do that. Check back in a day and I'll post the download info.

    Hi!

I am having trouble running this software. I am wondering if someone could help me.

I am putting the video files in the same directory as avi_gain_v07 and running AVI_GAIN_Regular.BAT (also tried AVI_GAIN_LOSSLESS.BAT). They appear to be running correctly as they create *temporary files* and appear to be performing some computations, but when I go to the 'completed' directory, there is nothing in there. Does anyone have an idea of what is happening?

    Thanks,

    ~Lukis

    Soopafresh :

I don't have a good audio system, so I can't make the following test that I wish to ask you :

If I apply a MP3 audio gain, and thereafter use the BOOST switch of besweet what should be the result ?

I mean, Using a MP3 already with a dB gain and transcoding it to AC3 DVD compliant format using Boost

can I mix both ? MP3 Gain and Boost when transcoding to AC3, or is not recommended ?

And also, what should be the results when I apply a MP3 Gain and thereafter the Upmix functions of yours ?

    Delta2:

It will vary from file to file. Some things will sound good, others won't.

can I mix both ? MP3 Gain and Boost when transcoding to AC3, or is not recommended ?

    Let your ears decide

And also, what should be the results when I apply a MP3 Gain and thereafter the Upmix functions of yours ?

My upmix function already runs MP3gain on the file.

So, test your favorite combination of things. I've added some things to my upmix function to try to avoid distortion, but because it is automatic it doesn't work every single time. But it's pretty good at making a louder 5.1 AC3 file from your 2 channel MP3

    Soopafresh,

These normalizing scripts have saved us a massive amount of work over time, thanks!

I have a small change in the code to the lossless bat. It kept hanging on me and after a bit of research I found it was this line of code doing it:

    del x-*.avi

For the batch to run correctly, this line must read:

    if exist x-*.avi del x-*.avi

I spotted the bug in both v7 and v8 beta.
    Hope this helps.

    hi soopafresh
    thanks for yr app.
i'm trying to increase the volume in my avi file encoded with ac3 (5 or 5.1ch 448 khz).
with yr app the volume is increased but the output avi file is in stereo.
what do i need to do to get the 5.1 ch back?

I have a question about the dynamic range compression.

Is there a way to change how much compression is used? I was compressing my demuxed audio files "1:4 Compressor at -20 dB".

Soopaloud seems to go way beyond that, so hiss and background noise is just as loud as speaking when no one is speaking. 4:1 at -20 dB compresses the range quite dramatically, but Soopaloud aims to destroy it.

Is there a way I could change this? I remember reading that level.exe does the dynamic range compression.

I love Avi Gain Lossless and Regular, by the way.

Not with the current command line compressor, as Level.exe has no settings or controls . If there's another app out there which can perform limiting/compression from the command line, then that would be an option. I had originally tested a command line VST plugin wrapper (http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2425.html), but it didn't work. That would be the optimal method, as there are a lot of great free VST compressors out there.

I also tried a Windows port of Sox http://bashcurescancer.com/man/cmd/sox but couldn't figure out the syntax. A nice app with less than stellar documentation.

  17. I'm a newbie and not an expert with computer.Got your batch program for normalizing audio. Thank you so much for creating this. My question is: why after creating the new file it changes the file name from : [filename.avi ] in : "NORM-[filename].avi.divx "? it's a pain to change every filename now.

    thanks in advance

  18. hi.
i had a problem with the Chunk Viewer, and looking for a solution brought me here. i downloaded the avi gain and worked fine, except for one thing:
the avis i want to fix have 2 tracks, and the fixed file that avi gain generates comes with only 1 track, the other one disappears.
is there a way to keep both tracks?

    Thank you so much, Soopafresh!

This has saved me so much time!

By the way, like the person above me, I was having trouble with it going through the motions, but not writing any files (on Vista with an administrator's account, if that makes any difference), but the above beta version works great!

    Thanks again.

    Hi Soopa,

FANTASTIC utility...as I have A LOT of vids to "normalize" I never got to it, but with this script it's a breeze...my only problem (of course there had to be one) is that a couple of vids are out of sync after normalizing...any idea why/what to do about it?

    Thanks in advance,
    Dimitri

Hi Dimitri, you're not the only one. I get the same problem on some videos. That's the problem with an automated system - works on most, but not on all.

Try the beta version (a few posts up - Aug 25, 2008) and see if it helps, but I don't think it will. Still, it has an improved muxing method and I'd encourage anyone to try it.

Wow, Soopa...still following this thread actively...nice...well, I tried all versions, including the Beta one and the problem persists...no big problem, I'll have a look at a utility which can "re-sync" the video after it being "normalized"...anyway...normalizing +500 vids is a looooong work, but with your script it's just a question of time, and the comp can work while I'm at work of course.

    Thanks again,
    Dimitri

    Hello:

I have used the tool and I think it works great but I would like to know if it is possible to add a few parameters to simply increase the voice track. Normalizing using the script seems to have improved the sound quality on the movie I did it on but the voice still sounds a bit low. I would simply like to be able to increase the volume of the voice on the movie.

    Thanks

Nice batch file, although I had a bit of bother with one particularly quiet avi. The bulk of the movie was about 10% volume with a few loud sections at 50%, as displayed by Nero Wave Editor. I struggled to get either lame or normalize to genuinely normalize the audio, whatever I did with the switches. They always stopped short of 100%. When I recode mp3 I try and set the peaks at 100% because they are usually very brief. In fact with audio tracks I normally push the file 2db into clipping as my mp3 player is quiet In the end I recoded the wav file like this in Nero prior to recombination.

On the video stream, I was getting the divxmux error incompatible file format. In the end I ran the v1deo.avi stream through Format Factory, with divx selected and all set as 'default' except for audio disabled. This worked, and looking at the output, what format factory did was convert from DivX 3 to DivX 5.

Yeah, because it's automated, there is no way it will properly normalize every file, especially with an audio track like the one you've described. Sometimes it takes manual demuxing, conversion to WAV and editing in Audacity, Soundforge, Wavelab, etc to reduce the peaks and applying limiting.

You can try the beta version further up the thread as it uses mencoder rather than divxmux as the muxer. I don't have a DivX3 file to test it on, but it might work.

Updated the Process and Included 3 Scripts from Which You Can Choose -

Avi_Gain_Lossless.bat --- Runs Mp3gain on demuxed mp3 file, then muxes back into AVI. No recompression done on the original audio source. This one is good for mostly musical performances, as it maintains the dynamics of the original. To use this batch file, the audio track in your AVI must be MP3 to begin with.

Avi_Gain_Regular.bat --- Quite powerful and louder than the Lossless_Gain Method, but not for purists. Very good for low dialogue, speeches, home video, etc. Creates Mp3 audio via LAME encoder at 224Kbs

Avi_Gain_Soopa_Loud.bat --- For those who haven't had an ear wax removal session for some time. Sounds like the dynamic range compression of FM Radio.
Thank you friend, your solution helped me a lot! This automation to normalize/convert audio tracks inside AVI files is awsome!
just asking... Any new version around?
    Ty again.

Sometimes i need low mp3 quality, sometimes medium. I noticed in your batch files, only the 224kbps quality, so i done more options. look at this image uploaded by me. And sorry for my question in last post...
today i noticed my answer a few posts before mine

I think u need put credits 4 u inside the main file. Like a link to your post.
