I need to choose a Liteon DVD Recorder between LVW-5005 and LVW-5005X. Do you know which one is better and why? Thank you for your answer.

coody, here's an interesting thread from last June, discussing the LVW-5005 vs. 5005x https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=303033&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30
Basically, it appears that the 5005 can be hacked, and the 5005x can't be, if that is of interest to you. -

But, someone has already hacked the Liteon 5005X in the DVD Hacks forum. Is it not true?
Tthe 5005x cannot be hacked [in itself] but it can be turned into a ilo R04 which can be hacked. Or from iloR04 back to a 5005x. The files are here
http://www.ncc2315.com/ilo/
LiteOn and ilo are the same LiteOn made the 04 series ilo [Not the 05]
The 5005x is a rebaged ilo R04 without AllWrite
The 5005 has AllWrite
Some who have a NEW 5005 report that they cannot go back to a firmware that can be hacked
Upgrading an older 5005 to a firmware higher than 098 will result in a loss of the MV hack
If you want a hack Be Careful

Keep in mind the LiteOn and ilo 04 series are the same except for features and the firmware is different and not exchangeable -

I think if you open your mind and read the posts [not just mine] you may gain some real info on these units
The 5005x IS NOT an upgrade to the 5005 and will not copy all as you say Just because an x was placed after the 5 does not mean its an ugrade
You seem sold on the 5005x its a good machine Buy It
PS I think you missinterped I did not say the 5005x did not have AllWrite
If you feel I did Let me say
The 5005x has ALLWrite while the iloR04 Does Not The 5005x looks exactly as the ilo R04 -
Because seeing is believing, I decided to buy both for the testing. The following is my finding. The user’s manual is same except for the model number. The manual states both of the Liteon LVW-5005 and LVW-5005X have All write technology, reading and writing DVD+-R/+-RW. The LVW-5005X remote has two more buttons, VIDEO and SM SKIP while the LVW-5005 remote is a little large with comfortable looking. The LVW-5005X is a 2005 machine while the LVW-5005 is a 2003 machine. Both of the recorders can be hacked with the same code 2960. The LVW-5005 is a little sharper/brighter than the LVW-5005X when watching the TV and recording the TV program. In other words, the LVW-5005X picture is softer than the LVW-5005. Playing DVD has no difference. However, as most of the users report, the LVW-5005 has several bright horizontal lines in the middle of the screen while recording the TV program. The 4 hour mode is acceptable but 6 hours mode is not for both of the recorders. Because the horizontal lines effect on the picture quality directly, I tend to keep the Liteon LVW-5005X.

What is the difference between the picture quality of these two machines when recording from another source, like a TV tuner from a VCR, or from VHS tape? Does the LVW-5005X have a 3 hour recording mode (1/2 D1)?

I need to update my findings because the last post may mislead the others. I used a DVD RW tested two different units, recording one minute onto the same DVD RW with each unit. After several times recording, the Liteon 5005X failed. It could record a new DVD disc but failed recording onto a DVD RW several times. So I exchanged for another Liteon 5005X. But it still had the same problem. Because two Liteon 5005X have the same problem, I believe the problem is inherent. I returned it to the store. The Liteon 5005, however, had the problem, the disc did not open. Then I exchanged for another Liteon 5005. So far so good. It does not have the recording problems at least, regardless of how many times to copy onto a DVD RW. If you want to pick from either a Liteon 5005X or 5005, you should go with the 5005. But, you need to test it before you decide to keep it. I got it at $59 though the 5005X is cheaper, $49 at the Office Depot on Black Friday. Do not take risk to buy the Liteon 5005X. Since the unit did not cost much, I do not care the Liteon 5005 may be eventually out of order some day. I just hope it will keep usable as long as possible before I buy the other brand name DVD recorder with at least 10 hours recording time and the price decreases. BTW, both of Liteon 5005X and 5005 have only HQ(1 Hr), SP(2Hrs), EP(4Hrs) or SLP(6Hrs) recording time.
