It depends on what codecs you are planning on using. MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 are just the container names, they don't tell you much of anything about the format or codec used.

If you are thinking of Xvid or similar as an MPEG-4 codec, doesn't matter much which program you use, as all the work is being done by the codec. The program used is just a interface to it.

For easy, AutoGK, AVI.net, FairUse Wizard are a few interfaces. Virtual Dub or it's variants if you need filtering and editing. Quality is in the codec settings.

Can you be more specific what codec or format you want to convert to?

  3. I apologize for lack of clarity. I am working with Vegas 4.0 and have an Mpeg2 NTSC clip that I would like to post on Google Video as an Mpeg4. GV works with all varients of Mpeg4, from what I understand.

It depends which codecs you have available, but you could use the Xvid codec and VirtualDub Mod, both freeware. VD Mod will accept MPEG-2 and output Xvid or other MPEG-4 codecs. Lots of guides for VDM in the VDM toolpage.

And since this isn't advanced, moving you to our Newbie/General Forum.

  5. Does not google video re-encode to mpeg4 anyway? (like youtube does)

    Just upload the mpeg2,
only reason I could see to transocode it to mpeg4 first
is to get a file that is half the size (youtube have a 100MB limit)

virtualdubmpeg2 can do it, install xvid codec for vdub to work with.

    Hi,
    1. Not free (29.99US) but, equivalent if not better quality than DivX,XviD,3ivX etc. Very easy interface and true MPEG-4 muxing without separate audio programs -> Nero Recode

    2. Free, excellent quality and humongous learning curve -> MeGUI with XviDencRAW
