    Hi again guys!

I'm searching for an x-mas present for my dad.

Does anyone know of a good forum that discuses GPS Satellite Systems?

    Any help would be great!

    Thanks!

Handheld, for the car, for the laptop?

I few months ago I found a cool site about "Geo-cacheing" (SP) kind of a GPS treasure hunt thing. I am kind of in the market myself for the hand held type, but I am always slow to make up my mind and new models come out before I commit adding to the confusion. I do however want one with radio transmiting capibilities. (Yeah, right, like I'll ever have a chance to get lost in the woods anytime soon).

This is not the site that I had in mind, just the first one that poped up

Damned if I know. It was one of those things when I got off on a tangent. It was an old site, but fairly simple on the "how to" Guides.

You asked about a forum, so I found a forum. (Pretty deep stuff for the uninitiated, huh?)

I am thinking that someone would be better off joining a club or taking a course to learn geocaching or realworld navigating with a GPS. The big stores that carry a selection, don't seem to have staff that knows all that much about them.

I want to do some trail mapping. (mark up accuratley on existing maps the trails at my place and some adjoing lands)

Timber inventory. Locate, assey and inventory into an interactive database/map to determine the best management

Just have one to play with.

Have to do my research...my dad hunts...and drives....like all of us...so I want to get him something that works well...and supposedly the Tom Tom One is good...regardless, research is on the way...I signed up to that forum you posted!

    Thanks.

    Information overload!

My biggest problem surfing the net is that I get distracted too easily. Start out looking for a screwdriver and end up reading about quantium physics.

So what have you learned about GPS units?

I have learned that there is no perfect all around solution!

Have you picked anything out yet?

Earlier this year I bought an Earthmate GPS for my laptop ($89) It does all it says it will, but it is not meant to be messed with while you drive unless you have a spare set of hands. I think that it is pretty good for the money and if your dad doesn't mind using his laptop while he drives it is the cheapest thing I know of.

Don't go by their prices at that site.

I have seen a couple of the TOM TOM units in action and they look pretty damn good, but for $500 they had better be.

I have been kicking around the idea of a PDA, but I can't keep up with the technology. Some of these can do some sort of GPS too. What I would really like is a ruggedized kick ass PDA/GPS/phone/ with all of the bells and whistles that will run Excel with a touch screen and keyboard. Oh yeah, under a hundred buck would be sweet too. I guess that I'll just keep kicking that idea around

Looks like some good advice, actually it looks like Greek or Martian to me, because it's all kind of new to me. I am jealous of your dad and I never even met the guy. Now I have to decide if the kids get Christmas toys or if Daddy does, poor kids.

Once you know the model numbers it is just a matter of drilling down the best price, there maybe package or bundle deals out there. Happy hunting, to you and your dad!
