I have a Dell E1705 laptop. I was informed when I purchased the laptop that it could output surround sound signals. What additional hardware/software do I need in order to output an audio signal from my laptop to a surround sound capable receiver? Do I just need a headphone jack to rca composite audio jacks cable?

I'd look for digital coax or optical output.

yes that is the connection you need. it should be a small square like connector. to get full surround sound you will need a stereo/theatre system and can accept a spdif input and decode dolby digital and/or dts. also you will need the digital cable to connect the two, which is a little expensive due to it being fiber optic.
