Intalled this latest version but after encoding a file to avi it does not play
I get the message that the file needs a decoder that is not installed.
    Which decoder should I install?
    Thanks

You could try ffdshow. It plays most avi files.
If you don't want to install new codecs vlc media player should work also.

Doesnt the Xvid codec encode and decode? All you need is the xvid
I love it when a plan comes together!

Yeah that's what I thought it would but doesn't decode apparently. MPC says that the codec is not installed or missing.

The Xvid codec encodes and decodes (that's what a codec does) the installer also includes a dshow decoder which is what MPC would use. Only thing I can think of is that you used a different FourCC (than XVID) when you encoded.

Problem is that at the time I was using Super to encode from flv to avi and Super does not have a fourcc option (as far as I know) the default setting was mp4.
Although there is an option to directly set Xvid via the menu.
VD was accepting Divx encoding but wasn't accepting Xvid don't know why.
