You have two good chioces .

Hard case , as seen used by pc tech's to carry tools ... these a small aluminium tool box's which can have locks ... I dont think they'd be stupid ... but I recommend you print out in big red letters "do not xray - sensitive" ... hand inspection only .

And write down the hd's info ... you never know with these clown's ... crap just gose missing .

Pack around and between the drives with foam insulation ... and the drives in seperate antistatic bags ... they should arrive safe in one peice ... beware of luggage handler's ... they chuck things about ... they do in post office's .

    --------------

Or a good quality camera bag with plenty of padding , dense cardboard for this ... drives in antistatic bags , and wrap a teatowel around them very tightly , and tape them ... they should then be able to handle almost any impact they might suffer during transit .

Except for direct hit from a meteorite ... lol and welcome to aus ... mate .

I wouldn't worry too much about X-rays affecting your hard disks.
By the time the X-rays imparted enough energy to damage a hard drive the operator would have burst into flames, and your bag/box would have exploded. There is more danger from "metal detectors" affecting your data on a HD than X-rays - And that danger is around Zero.
Hard disk casings (being metal) are impervious to X-rays, and will be hand examined anyway, after the operator of the examining machine has boosted the power up to Max and still not seen anything except metal rectangles.
Bubble-wrap each drive, and pack tightly to restrict movement into a hard box would be my advice.

If, on the other hand, you are more worried about your data being examined by Customs, and maybe having passwords/personal details lifted into that Netherworld of low-paid security folk, then that's a different matter.

    P.S.

I found these rpelies very useful i appreciate your help very much.

The other option is bringing all of them in hand luggage?
    Is this recommended?
How would i do it if i did it?
What would they need to be wrapped in?

    cheers!

  7. Do you have a bunch of old 40Gb you play to take with you?

If so maybe it's time to transfer them all to one single 500GB.
It's sure it's easier to take one drive with you.

Though if it fails, you would loose all the data.

Buy two and resell one when you get there?, just as backup plan.

    Is this a good idea?

Putting them all in pcs and screwing them in.
Is that the safest way they could go abroad?

After moving from the US to Europe...I personally recommend guitar cases since my guitars arrived completely untouched....sure it's not very practical but that is my opinion...

I'd just look on Ebay for an old "flight case" being sold near you. Wrap the HDD's in old t-shirts that you are also taking with you...presto....all you need to worry about is the extra charges(if any) if you want them to be on the same plane as you.

Normally I would have reccomended shipping with a company like Fed-UPS or the like just because I dislike air travel and airports in general, but anything could go wrong no matter what you try.

Pelican cases are probably considered the best consumer case for durability and there are other knock offs just like them.

There is another type case called an ATA type case (SP) like the bands or trade shows use. I think that some times they are even called trade show cases.

Being able to have back ups left behind or sent ahead would be a good idea and insuring the hell out of them with the carrier I think gets your package a little better treatment.

Putting some of those "Rough handling" indicators on the outside of the box might help too
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?
