  1. Is there any software that will create an AVI out of a screensaver? I know FRAPS does this for games, but it won't work for screensavers. Thanks

Try CamStudio, it should do the trick.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

  3. Excellent program. It did the job fine. My only question is: how to capture to fully uncompressed AVI? Because in the Video Options of this program, only several compressors are listed, there's no option for fully uncompressed. Thanks.

Try installing a lossless compression codec like lagarith and see if it can use that.

  5. Just upgraded my 2.8 dual-core with GeForce 7600GT and running latest Fraps. Capturing aquarium screensaver to AVI at 1280x1024 - very smooth.

Can you explain how you used Fraps to capture the screensaver? I also have the latest Fraps, but it is uanble to deal with screensavers.

What is your system configuration? Fraps is optimized for dual-core, but also works with my standard computer with a GeForce 6200. You need a fast machine to capture high-res smoothly. My Fraps settings are Movies: 29.97, record sound, detect best sound input. Thats all. I use the F9 key to start and stop captures.

I too am trying to record a screensaver with Fraps... I've tried CamStudio with the lossless codec mentioned above but CamStudio only records up to 3fps... Fraps is amazing when playing games (GTA:SA) but I can't get it to record a screensaver... When I press F9 to start recording the screensaver closes... obviously... but it sounds like "nicksteel" was able to do it... Can you explain farther?

    Thanks

  9. Many screensavers exit on any key press. The ones I've done have setup option to exit on "Escape" only. Also, you can select another Fraps key other than F9. Even if your saver exits on any key, some have a setup key (space, enter, etc) you can press while it running. If so, try to set Windows Task Manager priorities while in this setup mode and start Fraps before exiting.

I have also found that you should defrag your capture drive, whether or not defrag says you need it. Also, I use Windows Task Manager (Ctl Alt Del) to set Fraps priority to Realtime, screensaver to Abovenormal, after turning everything I can off (virus protection, firewall, etc). Be sure to reboot after capture to enable everything again!

Trying to capture hi-res screensavers is a bit challenging at times, but I like to encode anamorphic widescreen for my plasma and this needs a good source for ending up with good dvd's. I am encoding with HCenc to 720x480 overscan 2 with avs settings from FitCD.

Using Avysynth allows me to join the many Fraps 4GB files with "++" and process without sound sync problems. I extract the audio as a wave file with VirtualDub, convert to mp2 and mux with m2v vide with Mplex as DVD. I edit out the dupicate frame sections between files in VideoReDo, after creating final mpg file. I then use DVD-Lab Pro to make DVD.

Which screensaver are you working with? All this is not really complicated, just sounds that way. The processing can be pretty slow, but I let everything long run overnight.

    Keep on trying!
