Hi.
As per title. Is this the correct way? Basically, all edit sessions are saved to/run on the computer drive rather than the external drive?

If I understand what you are saying, probably. I have the C: drive wth operating system and editing software on it, Windows swap file and video being worked on kept on the internal D: drive and keep copies of those files on an external USB drive. Due to the slower access speed of the external drive, I wouldn't actually work with those files from the external.
