Hi there,
There may be a simple solution for this, but I am yet to find one.
I am on a film festival committee here in town. Last year, I had to take clips from copyrighted DVDs and edit them together for a couple of actors that were guests at the festival. I had lots of problems and ended up using mostly clips from sources that were not copy-protected.
I have used DVD Decrypter to copy whole DVDs for other purposes before, so I know there are way around the copy-protection.
What is the best way to get clips to AVI for editing purposes? I edit in Premiere Pro, btw.

Dvd shrink in reauthoring mode to cut out the clips.
Vob2mpg.
Import the mpg in premiere pro. If premiere pro wont import the mpg you can try convert it to avi with virtualdubmpeg2.
But I don't think you are allowed to give away clips from copyrighted dvds...but you maybe have permission... -
After you've decrypted the DVD using DVDDecrypter with file splitting set to none (make sure you have permission to use the clips!) load the VOB in VirtualDubMod and save out the clips as DV AVI (get the Panasonic DV codec).
