Actually, what you're looking for is the H.264 codec. x264 (at least on the PC end) is a command-line only encoder now, if I remember correctly. Not sure what you can use in a general codec sense (decoder AND encoder), but the Tools section in the menu to the left is a good place to start. Search for "H.264" or "H264" (without the quotes, of course).

Incidentally, .dmg files are usually Mac disk images.

There is no x264 codec. It is an encoder only, no decoder and the command line (only official encoder since VfW support was removed) is still H.264.

"264qtcodec-1[1].0.0.dmg" would be for OSX. No port for quicktime under win32 as far as I know. Doesn't make too much sense anyway since it would mean that you could encode streams with QuickTime that it itself can't decode do to the crappy AVC decoder that ships with QuickTime.

Probably you want the VfW encoder, which was removed from offical source. You can still find binaries at Death The Sheep's site though.

  5. If you need a VFW x264 encoder the last (as far as I know) version with the VFW encoder can be found here:

    http://mirror02.x264.nl/x264/revision573/x264-573-install.exe

As celtic_druid is so fond of pointing out, x264 only includes an encoder, so you'll need a decoder to watch your creations. You can use ffdshow or a media player with an h.264 decoder built in -- like VLC.

Actually there is a revision 600 (current revision) build at DeatTheSheep's site. They also I believe added some of the missing features.

I'm not posting a link, but anyone who really wants to encode via VfW, just search for "DeathTheSheep United AVC VfW".
