    Okey...

    Found the TV:
    http://www.panasonic.no/servlet/PB/menu/1057105_l13/index.html

    Question is:
    - Will it work with the dvp5960?!

Component video in / progressive: No
    Does this mean I'm f$€£@$?

It will work, but to get best picture quality your friends would either have to disconnect the digital tuner they are already using or else use an external switching box. The alternative is for them to use the second AV input in composite video mode. As far as I know the Philips will not output S-video via Scart but I could be wrong as some players do including the Pioneer.

That's not the problem. The problem is the second SCART connector on the TV doesn't support component video, apparently only s-video.

    AV1 21 pin AV in/out, RGB in
    AV2 21 pin AV in/out, S-video in
AV3 front AV in, S-video in
So you would need to use a switchbox or, if the Satellite box can output s-video, reverse the two inputs (DVD player on SCART1, Satellite tuner on SCART2) . Satellite DTV (unless it's HD) is usually lower quality (bitrate and resolution) than DVD anyway.

In case there's any confusion I should point out that both 21-pin sockets on the Panasonic also accept composite video.

The question is therefore: will the satelite decoder output s-video?
    It's a GRUNDIG satelite decoder... that's all i know...
It sure LOOKS like this one:

Composite video will look fine on that TV.

    Don't fret over it.

Your thoughts on composite being "horrible" are too intense.

You probably wouldn't be able to tell the different between S-video and composite.

No, the question is whether your friends would rather tolerate composite video from the DVD player (which is quite good) or S-video from the satellite decoder (which is quite bad). My guess is they would leave the satellite setup as it is now and just plug the DVD player into the spare scart socket on the back of the TV. That's what 90% of 'normal' people do. It's only 'geeks' like us who care about the difference between RGB, s-video and composite signals from a DVD player

Yes that is exactly what I was trying to say ... composite output from the DVD player will look fine on that TV.

As someone else suggested a component switcher box could always be bought at some point so that two component devices can be hooked up to the one component input on the TV.

So... if what you have written is correct; the difference between digital satelite going through s-video instead of rgb is far bigger than dvd going through composite instead of rgb...?

So I can buy the dvdplayer for them without worrying they'll find the picture too crappy connecting it to the spare scart? That's my worry; the quality; won't divx and xvid look even worse? Percentwise; how much better will a s-video signal be than a composite... judging a divx movie will be seen through a panasonic crt 32" tv??

I think me and the second person in this buy is starting to like the idea of buying a usb compatible dvdplayer (since they've got a 300gigs drive)

Your friends would only notice the difference between RGB and composite from a DVD player around 10% of the time whereas they would notice the difference between RGB and composite from the satellite receiver all the time. That is my experience anyway. S-video performance lies somewhere between the two but I am guessing they would give priority to satellite viewing over DVD and DivX.

Ok... then we're on the brink of closure

    But first:
I want to thank everybody who have been kind enough to reply on my annoying concerns..
    Thanks!

    Well:
I just pressed the order button, so now it's no return: hope this topic will be to any help for those with similar problems (hardly probable though).

    Lastly;
Special thanks to ntscuser, FulciLives and jagabo.
