  1. Hi,

I have some videos in DivX and in Xvid. Till yesterday all of them played perfectly in WMP and Media Player Classic. Today I brought my DVD burner, and decided to convert them to DVD [as my stand alone DVD player does not support DivX]. But after installing NERO OEM Suite that came with the burner I find out that Neither of the above players can play the DivX and Xvid files though DivX player played both of them flawlessly. I am not sure whether this happened because of the NERO so I uninstalled NERO, but the problem remained. Then I updated DivX to the latest version using the updater came with the DivX bundle but that did not solve the problem. I can not convert the files too. I tried SUPER and TmpgEnc both, but both of these give me error masege.

So please help me out. I need to make those files play in my default player and need to convert them to DVD- but can not figure out the way.

BTW the burner that I bought today is LITE ON Light Scribe, in case you need to know.

  2. Two more info:

    1. Out of these video files one encoded in DivX played in WMP from the begining, but the others failed.

    2. I checked all the files using GSpot, and it reports that the codecs are installed properly .
Still no idea why the problem is occurring.

Just to view them, try VLC Media Player. It has it's own codecs so it doesn't need the system codecs.

I wouldn't be surprised that Nero messed up your software players. I suspect it installed a player?

Uninstalling Nero will not generally remove it entirely. You probably need to run Nero Clean Tool. http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Clean_Tools.html There is also a version for Nero 7 there somewhere.

If all that fails, maybe a system restore to a date before you installed Nero?

Or it may not be Nero at all. But try VLC and that may tell you if it's a codec problem, which it sounds like.

Test your files in GSpot, it will tell directly if the codecs are installed or not for playback and you'll know what to correct after Nero's invasion.

  5. Hello Mats , good to see you my friend.
XViD Codec? Do I need to install it separately when I already have DivX installed?[/b] If yes then please guide me to the site from where I cn download XViD codec.[/b] I tried to uninstall and reinstall DiVX, but that did not help.

Thank you redwudz for your reply.

I downloaded both the cleaning tool and VLC. When I tried to play the XViD file in it and the DiVX files in it it gave an error massege that the AVI file is broken and do I wnat to replaire it. Though I am trying to replaire it using VLC I am not sure whether it works or not. Though curiously both these files played flawlessly in DiVX player which comes bundled with DiVX pack. Moreover both these files also played smoothly yesterday !

So what shouild I do? Both these files are ireplacable for me. Is there no way to convert/recover these files?

    Please help.

My guess is that Nero installs some DirectShow filter that takes precedence over the real DivX/XviD codecs, and that the Nero filter doesn't work.
If you use GSpot, and try to render the now not working files, see if there's some Nero leftover involved in the process.

  8. Hi friends,
    two newses:

    1. XViD installation is allowing the TMPGEnc to accept the file and I hope it will convert.
    2. WMP or the MP Classic still can not play the files, though VLC played both of them after giving the warning that files may be broken.

Now should I continue to convert the files using TMPGEnc? Or there are better ways to convert?

    Please help.

If you want to reencode to DVD - go ahead and try. But that VLC reports them as maybe broken is a bad sign...

Try and see if it works - It can't be any worse than a failure!

  13. As I tried to encode it with TMPGEnc, it is giving me an warning that the final file size is greater than 4070MB and some burner may not recognise it as a video stream and asking me theconfirmation to continue,

So what exactly should I do?

The final file size is coming about 4216MB and the disc I intend to use is of 120min 4.7GB.

  14. And secondly is TMPGEnc the best to encode or I should opt for some other free one?

Mats, I agree completely with you that the situation can not be worst than it is presently .

BTW, you said that it is a bad news that VLC reported them broken, but please note that fact that I played them with out any problem yesterday only and after that Iinstalled NERO and POWERDVD, thats all ! Though PWDVD could not play DiVX or XViD.

  15. Hi Mats,
TMPGEnc seems to have rendered the XViD file but the audio and video streams are encoded separately. So how am I suppose to make a DVD out of it?

The video file is of about 3GB and MPEG2 and the audio stream is of 946MB size, Windows PCM.

  16. Hi Mats,

Miracle- I can't beleive my luck
The two files are just copies of the original files which bychance I did not delete. The originals are playing perfectly in All Media Players and VLC also is not showing any error massege.

So please tell me how best these can be convert to DVD.

    Thank you.

  17. Hi,
I tried to encode the XViD file with AVI to DVD but it did not give me any option to choose the audio codec. I tried to extract the audio track using VirtuaDub, though it showed that it was extracted, but the file must had someproblems. I tried to play with it audacity, but it could not be opened. This file was not accepted by TMPGEnc too- TMPGEnc simply hanged .
I tried to use "AVI Audio Decompressor v.1.4" but that also did not seem produce any proper file as the file could not be processed in "headac3he-0.23a". "headac3he-0.23a" was giving a zero length audio file.

Then I used my NERO 6's bundled Nero Vision 3 to encode it to DVD and burnt it successfully too. Though I am not happy with the sound. So could it be extracted some other way?

I am assured from my experience of encoding DivX files to VCDs that the audio should be amplified atleast 10db to get a proper quality of sound.

    Please help.

  18. Hi

Could any one please tell what is the best way to convert AVIs to DVD to fit in DVD5 disc? I tried using WINAVI 7.7 and NERO Vision 4 but the result seems a bit jerky, it is not perfectly smooth.

    Please help

There's no "best" - As AVI is such a wide concept, each individula file may need its own special treatment. Once you've read and tried each and every of the 46 processes described under CONVER left, AVI to DVD, you're well equiped to face most AVIs.
The one application, that handles most AVIs fairly well, seems to be convertx2dvd.
However, your best option is to get a DVD player that plays AVI DivX/XviD files. No conversion needed - just burn the AVI to CD or DVD as data, and play.

  21. HI Mats

I used the tool to convert a movie and it worked really fast. Only one thing that I need to know. Is there any option in that software which will allow me to make the DVDs 5.1 compatible [just like the originals]?

I have used Nero VE3 and 4 both and the result I posted above. The computer in which I'm doing these conversion have the following system specification:

    AMD Athlon XP 1800+
640MB of DDR memory 266 Mhz bus
nVidia FX 4000 card with 128MB on board memory
    Two HDD 40+80GB [IDE]
The programs are loaded in 1st 40GB HDD but the input and output files are destined for the 2nd HDD. I have 3 OSes, WinXP Pro [SP2]. FC5 and Ubuntu. Only FC5 is in 2nd HDD, but the other two are in 1st HDD.

To convert a full length DivX movie VE3 took around 6 hrs, the quality setting was Fit to Disk for DVD5. High quality setting resulted VE4 to take 11 hrs and 30 mins to convert.

Are these normal? Is here any way to make it faster?

I need your advices on these very badly. As i'm trying to standardise one method.

    Please help.

No idea, since I said "to hell" with all silly AVI to DVD conversions and bought me a player that plays DivX/XviD, for money earned in the time it takes to do convert one AVI to DVD. And I'm not all that well paid.

  23. And I'm not all that well paid.
Same here Mats- In my case though a good quality stand alone DVD player will cost me around Rs. 6,500 [about 100 euro], more than half of my monthly salary.

Still thank you very much for your help here and regarding ImgBurn 2.
