....specifically, uncompressing it back to original raw DV quality?

I've searched around Google and the site here and did not see an answer, but similar questions about VOB files.

I'm starting to think that it cannot be done. (perhaps, unless the original mpeg-1 codec is on the same PC/compressing application)

I am trying to take a cell phone MPEG1 file and was hoping to make it better.

Not as far as im aware. Once you compress a file to MPEG1 you take out (loose quality) bits of information to compress it . So the information you want to add back in is not actually present in the MPEG1 file you have.

You would need the original file and need to compress that to improve the quality.

You can't get back what you don't have.

About the best you might do is do some light filtering and make it look a bit smoother. But you will still have some conversion loss. You could use VirtualDub Mod and convert it to a lower compression format like DV by adding the Panasonic DV Codec. Then use some of the hundred or so VD filters available. Some are here: http://neuron2.net/

But I wouldn't expect too much.

What format do you want to end up with?

Thanks guys. I get it. I guess I was hoping for some "reverse engineering" if you know what I mean. lol. Run the CODEC backwards and you get back lost bits, right??

Any format will work for me, I was just hoping to create a better finished quality. Well, significantly better that is.

I can go ahead and use it as is. No big deal.

    Thanks for the quick responses!
