when i copy a bunch of images from my digital camera to a folder the laptop restarts itself halfway through transfering and the same happens for my mp3 player, i then have to copy about 4 images at a time for it not to restart and the same goes for the mp3 player but with mps's.

It mainly happens halfway through large file downloads when connected to the internet and sometimes just at random times but thats quite rare.

It once happened just after I turned the laptop on to transfer images across so I dont think it happens because of heat,

this problem has been bugging me for months now and I still cant sort it and its soo frustrating downloading a file for an hour and it restarts when there just mins left, im thinking of takeing it to a computer shop to see if they know but Im scared of how much they might charge.

    why is this?

It might be a good idea to have the process viewer active when you're attempting those tasks, to see if there's anything that's causing the CPU to hit 100% or more. Does the fan audibly kick in around the time of the reboot? Are there any other processes running that might help bog down the system?

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties from the menu. Click on the Advanced tab, then on the button marked Settings in the box marked Startup and Recovery. Untick Automatically Restart, then click OK and OK again. Try copying files across from you camera again, and wait until it crashes. This time, hopefully, you will see an error message that may help you diagnose the problem.

damn I spoke too soon, I was just surfing the net and the screen went all blue with white text sayin:

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_MORE

    Stop: 0x000000D1 (0x80000038, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xF54CFB5C)

    usbohci.sys - Adress F54CFB5C base at F54CF000, BATESTAMP 3D6DDC30

I had to use the power button to restart the laptop and when it booted up I got 2 'your system has recovered from a serious error' boxes reading:

    C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini111206-01.dmp
    C:\DOCUME~1\VIJAY\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER2.tmp.dir00\sys data.xml

    C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini111306-01.dmp
    C:\DOCUME~1\VIJAY\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER3.tmp.dir00\sys data.xml

Normally when it restarted by itself that blue screen flashed for only a second but because the automatically restart was off I got to read it properly.

    any ideas?

It is related to your USB subsystem drivers. At a guess, do you have a USB DSL modem connected ? I have seen USB modems crap out like this before (my first DSL modem worked happily for two years, then crapped out when it was reinstalled to change the connection type). Unfortunately, the only solution I have ever been able to find that completely fixes the problem is to switch to an ethernet based modem instead. I was able to find plenty of references and suggestions - update the drivers, reinstall windows etc, but even the modem company (d-link) had no solution. They just blamed Microsoft.

That makes it a little more complicated when it's a laptop, but generally that is related to a corrupted hardware driver. The 'usbohci.sys' suggests it involves your USB driver or a USB hardware device. You might try unplugging all those and see if that helps. Generally the USB driver is part of the OS, but you could try uninstalling it. You would want your OS disc handy, though.

You might also try to boot in 'Safe Mode' and see if you still have the same problem. Safe Mode doesn't load the installed drivers. If it works, then a bad driver would be more likely.

And it could still be a virus or malware, you might try a free Trend Micro online scan. http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp

When I do a Google search for 'usbohci.sys', it comes up with several hits that seem to be similar to your problem.

If you have a HP laptop, this might relate: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00793316&lc=en&cc=py&dlc=es&product=3231960

Try that search and you will see some other ones which may help. It appears to be a problem with the USB 2.0 driver.

Do you have a SIS chipset motherboard in your laptop? Otherwise, I wouldn't use the patch. If disconnecting the USB modem cures the problem, I would complain to your ISP if they are the ones that supplied it. Maybe they have a Ethernet modem available instead? The only other thought I would have is to try a PCMCIA USB card and input the modem through that. This is all assuming the modem is causing the problem.

Did you try a Google search for your laptop model and usb problems?
