Well I finally got it to work, but I havent tried to cap with it yet, but I got the video and sound to open in V-dub. Seems like i have all the cap formats and fields too, and it goes higher than 352x240 also, unlike someone mentioned before. How i got this to work wasn't an exact science so bear with me. This is my set up: Duron 700MHz, 20 GIG, via chipset, 320MB ram, ATI Rage Fury Pro 32M card.Running windows ME.
This is what i have installed to get this to work.
1. Go to ATI's website under drivers. Look for driver number: 4.13.7192 It says it supports "Direct Show capture suport", not too sure myself what that means..Before you install this driver, be sure to uninstall any other ATI display driver!!
2. Download the WDM Wrapper. Go to "Video Reviews" section and look under the ATI Raedeon review to find it in the article.
You definately need those two things. Now to be honest, I'm not sure if you need these next things, just do them if the other 2 alone don't work for you, since I have been trying to get this to work and installing several updates and drivers.
3.I downloaded the Video Capture Update for Directx 8.0 at microsoft.com Installed that, and be sure to have the 8.0 version. I can't say that you really need this, I'm not sure but i have it on my computer now.
Now i had all these things installed except the ATI display driver 4.13.7192, i had the other driver that said it included VFW in it, but that didn't work. I downloaded the 7192, and uninstalled the previous driver, reinstalled the 7192, and finially it worked! This is my current set up that works, but like i said, you need the first 2, and i would try that first. If it still doesn't work, then do the capture update for Directx 8.0.

Ok, here's the skinny on how to make this work. For all of you who have ATI cards and can't get VirtualDub to cap video, check this out. This is what i came up with by process of elimintation, and several reboots and uninstalls.
I have the ATI Rage Fury Pro card, and using windows ME.
1. Some or all of ATI's drivers don't support Video For Windows, the driver that Virtualdub needs to cap video. YOu need the "wrapper" program to help tie the video card to Virtualdub. Be ware, some of ATI's drivers won't work with the wrapper program. I have found 2 ATI drivers that do work with the wrapper.
4.13.7192 (the latest ATI driver for my card)
4.13.7078 (the driver that came bundled on cd)
Others may work, but I have used both, and each works with the wrapper program and V-dub.
2. I had believed that DirectX had a role in making this work, but it doesn't. If you are using the MMC software to cap vids, then it is important, since you need different versions to make the video in capturing work. I had mentioned using the DirectX video capture update, but you don't need it. If your're haveing problems using MultiMedia Center software, then update your DirectX to the latest version.
3. I personally had problems with capping the audio onto the video. I could hear the audio during capping, but not on the capped file. I tried adjusting all the inputs and volumes for record and to no avail. I was currently using the "on board" sound card on my motherboard, and this just wasn't working. Thanks to whoever mentioned this, but I went and picked up a pci soundblaster soundcard. After i disabled my onboard, and installed the SB card, I could finnally cap my video with audio. The only explanation i can come up with is that either the wrapper program, or V-dub's program, won't cap audio off of the motherboard card. I tried everything, so this was the route I took and it worked perfectly.
Thanks to all who helped me out, and If anyone has questions for me about this, just speak up. -
where can i find the wdm wrapper ?
i looked at ati's web-site but did
not find it

Congratulation!!!! You've just made it past door number 1. Only 68 more doors to go before you will be happy with what you're about to capture.
Your PC system is very similar to mine and I'm up to door #6. I have a ATI AIW Radeon 32mb PCI(sh%$##t) and wish I had the AGP version(still trying to get it). I got past doors 1,2,3,4, by installing, finding, downloading and installing MMC 7.5, WFW, Wrapper, New drivers, DirectX8.1 (which has the video update embedded in it.), down loading Virtual dub, installing (worked fine after wrapper was installed. I have capture about 10 test videos, some off my onboard TV adapter, made a compliant VCD disk, tested AVI capture. This had bad audio sync since I'm having a problem with dropping frames (as many other are). I have used VDub to re-sync the video and audio files to match there data length. All of this effort I owe to the wonderful guys that participate in the VCD web site and especailly to those who have built the "How to sections"
None of us "Newbie's" could have gotten to where we are without the in depth guidance they have provided.
There is still about 60+ doors to go through and that is a lot of work. I can't tell you the number of times I was ready to give up. I've been through 4 different Video capture cards in the last 6 days,.... and I think I've found a keeper. This ATI AIW Radeon has what I need.
By the way,.. MMC 7.5 looks a lot different and has crashed my system 2 times since I've loaded it tonight. It is very sensitive with the TV player is on,.. it seems to have something to do with the mouse. It is not repeatable, you just have to click something,..like the speaker volume control button at the wrong time and the screen is locked up, the TV video will still play with sound and everything looks normal but it is locked tight,...= Big red switch.
Sorry for the long apend,.. but I wanted some key people out there to know who gets the credit for all of this hard work.

Well you can find the wrapper in the reviews section off to your left. Look under the Radeon review, and the link is in the article. Also an update: The ATI driver that came bundled with my card will not support anything over 352x240 capture. I then uninstalled that driver, then installed the 4.13.7192 driver, and that will allow full frame capture(ie.720x480)although when i try to capp at full frame, i get LOTS of dropped frames. Everything is great at 352x240 capture, using Huffyuv codec, and video looks good. Again, thanks to all who help out us newbies! You are appreciated..

Again, our system are almost identical, 700 MHZ Duron, and your last post indicated that your video at 352x240 is just fine.
I have no problem capturing AVI at 352x240 using either Vdub or MMC 7.5, but in both of these I see dropped frames in the final viewing, even though MMC 7.5 does not show me any dropped frame numbers? After one or two sections where "N" frames are dropped, the video looses sync. with the audio for the rest of the video.
Can you give me some more details about your system, motherboard, sound card, etc. This might give me a better clue where to look for problems. What do you use for Video input, VCR, camcorder, TV,???. I know the Tuner on these cards (ATI) are pretty cheap, but my signal in comes right off cable TV jack. The other thing is what kind of drives do you have, SCSI or IDE, what speed, ATA 66 or 100.
what PIO level are they set at in your Bios...
Hope you can help me with this infor. Thanks again.

Well, I havent' really done any major capping yet, at least with people talking to see how the sync is. But I'm gettin there. I'v pretty much just finnally gotten all of this hooked up and running fine. Just did a test vcd about a min and a half, part of Top Gun jet scene, from VHS, and it looked quite good. Not as good as the original vhs, but good none the less. I used 352x240 using Huffy. Used TMPG to convert, Nero 5.5 to burn. I'm still fairly new to computers, so the real technical stuff I'm still learning about I can't really help you with but here goes.
700MHz Duron processor
VIA chipset
20 GIG HD 5200 rpm
IDE (i think)
SoundBlaster Live sound card
320 MB of ram
ATI Rage Fury Pro W/ Video in/out 32 MB
LIke i said, not much done yet with longer vids, but hopefully tomorrow, i can start converting some vhs moveis and see how the audio to video sync is, and if i have the same prob as you do. Aslo, I have read that if you are using the onboard soundcard rather than a pci soundcard, you might have more sync problems. I actually just got my sound card today for about 70 bucks, and its great. I'll try to get some results by tomorrow night... -
Thanks for listing your system stuff and your process for capturing to a VCD. I am really interested to hear about your latest results since our system are so close. In fact your system is much slower than mine,...yet you haven't indicated you see any dropped frames in the output vidio. They look like the video just stops for a fraction of a second and then the motion or people jump forward to where they would have been if there were no dropped frames. If you have it you can't miss it. Others have said it really isn't dropped frames, it just buffer overrun where things get jammed up and blocks of data are just not stored.
My system is as follows;
700 MHZ Duron, 100MHZ FSB, 33MHZ PCI
256 MB S-DRam
ABit MB with Via KT133 chipset
20 GB 7200@ ATA 66MBs + 80BG 7200 @ATA 66 MBS
PCI A3sound card
ATI All IN Wonder Radeon AGP buss
Input sources are Canon 8mm camcorder, Sylvannia 4 head VCR,
RCA colortrack TV.
How does this compare to your system. Also, please go into more details as to the settings you use in Vdub,..ie. picture overlay, or preview, frame rate you set up, YuY2 format???, etc.
