Here is my problem, I have a media player for the TV and it plays fine the 23.98 .avi files i make out of dvds with no glitch at all, they run smootly and the only problem sometimes its i cant forward or rewind the movie but i use a windows program to repair the .avi and it fixes this problem.
However when i try to do the same thing with a 29.97 .avi the video runs like choppy its synced the audio and the video but it doesnt look smooth. The source of the video is the same a dvd source thats 29.97. Some dvds when i drop them on ffmpegx they say 29.97 but when i try the vobs it says 23.98 so I only change the frame rate and drop the complete folder of the dvd source into ffmpegx and I get a correct 23.98 .avi. The problem is when the source really is 29.98 and my .avi comes out horrible.
When I come across a 29.98 dvd source i have to use dr. divx a windows program, seems to be the only one to create a good .avi that plays fine on my media player. Ive tried handbrake which doesnt have the quality of ffmpegx or dr.divx but doesnt seem to fix the problem with the 29.98 .avi files(the conversions that makes)
Ive tried a lot of encoders and have done my homework on OSX to look for a fine encoder but it seems OSX is limited to 2 or 3 maybe encoders that could do a job and one is ffmpegx and the other one is handbrake and none can fix my problem. Any suggestions?
Also when i play this files on my mac or windows pc the 29.98 files the ones I have problems with they run smooth but I can see they dont look as good(I mean smooth video) as the 23.98 they run like with a lot of lines on the video I dont know how to explain.
Anyone?

major thanks for answering Im a huge fan of yours
So first of all thanks for a great tool its the best around.
I think i did this a couple of weeks ago but i get the same crippling thats why i moved to dr.divx because at first i thought well maybe if I encode the output file to 23.98 this will fix my problem but it didnt.
I will encode today again a 29.97 source using the 23.98 setting but I think it will come up with crippling. Ill post my results

sorry for hijacking my own post, but i would like to make a suggestion major, please if you can add an option to repair the .avi files sometimes they dont fast forward or rewind, and also in the tools section a normalize and volume gain for .avi files already encoded will do a lot of good since the .avis have low volume.
After i do my .avi with ffmpegx I use aviutil on windows and use a normalize and volume gain filter and .avis now have a great volume

I encoded a movie today using the framerate to 23.98 and it didnt work it looks like slow motion and the .log file is 15mb I cant post it. I used divx (mencoder)
any ideas major?

I think i will start doing conversion with other programs, demux and convert the 29.97 framerate to 23.98 mux again and do tests with normal encoding with mencoder see how it goes.
Ive also noticed that divx6 on windows can encode 29.97 and play flawlessly on my stand alone hdd media player of course i get a .divx file not an .avi file, but it works.
Could it be a codec problem?
