im having problems lately with codecs so ive completey removed all. i have reinstalled k-lite and divx and xvid.

i try using a avi to gif program (gif movie gear) and i get error message "dx50 codec is missing cannot load video" the dx50 codec is part of divx.

im also being told i do not have xvid codec but that comes with k-lite and the xvid codec i installed.

do i need to activate these codecs or something???

  2. You have discovered that codec packs are a bad idea. You can try using some of the codec removal tools (Codec Sniper, Filmerit, DirectShow Filter Manager) to clean up but your computer may be so screwed up now that you will have to reinstall Windows.

  5. It may not be as simple as a bad MPEG2 decoder. It might be an incompatabilty issue between an MPEG splitter and an MPEG decoder. Or a colorspace converter or video renderer (that which puts the video on-screen).

The typical mpeg playing process involves several filters:

    1) file reader (reads and buffers file)
    2) MPEG splitter (splits audio and video streams)
    3) MPEG video decoder (decompresses MPEG video)
    4) colorspace converter (converts YV12 to RGB or some other colorspace if necessary)
    5) video renderer (puts the video on screen)

(After step 2 there is a similar chain of filters to get the audio to the speakers.)

Make sure your graphics card is set up for video overlay. This will allow the graphics card to handle steps 4 and 5 in the above list. That is important on slower systems. Especially if you are trying to play full screen.

Shouldn't matter which codecs you delete. As you need to play a specific type of video, it won't work. Then you just install the codec for that file (type).

thanks for the detailed explanation jagabo, and all the advice everyone! had no idea it was that complicated (and i'm sure that was the simple version the problem is, my dvd's were working fine before. i installed the cole codec pack, and after that, my dvd's didn't play at all then i removed it, tried the klite codec pack...yes, i went down that long, slippery slope. the best i can achieve now is a continuously stuttering playback, and am fairly certain it's something to do with the codec's (or splitters, etc), but completely at a loss on how to fix it. any thoughts or possible diagnosis's? if it's an incompatibility issue between a splitter and decoder, any ideas on how to get that straightened out?? thanks again!

  8. Try using Media Player Classic to play your video. While playing, select Play -> Filters to see what filters are being used. That will give you some hints. You can select the filters from there to get some more information about them and maybe change some internal settings.

Also try using GraphEdit. Drag a file to the main GraphEdit window and it piece together a filter graph for playing it. You can use Graph -> Insert Filters to add different filters and manually disconnect and connect pins to see if you can find something that works better. That may tell you which filter(s) is causing the problem. (For example, if you find two MPEG decoders you can try the second one by deleting the first from the filter graph then adding the other.)
