on my machine. Not sure when Works got corrupted since I haven't used Word in about a month. I use Works Spreadsheat almost every day.

First, everytime I tried to open Word, my computer would restart. All the other programs in the Works Suite worked but not Word. I searched the internet for a fix and everyone said to rename the normal.dot file. Problem is, there is no normal.dot file on my machine.

I've spent the last three days trying to uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Works but all it has left me with is a program that won't work at all. Everytime I try to open a Works program or open a Works document, the computer restarts.

I can open Works in Safe Mode and everything works fine but the second I try to open a Works program or file in regular mode, the computer restarts.

I don't really want to format and reinstall Windows but I am not seeing another option. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have added a new dial-up modem to my PC since I can't get highspeed internet where I moved and am using Netscape ISP. Also, my printer and scanner are not hooked up since they are in storage but I've never had a problem before without them hooked up.

Are you sure that the version of works you are trying to install is the correct version? Microsoft has various updates to Works and Word/

Have you been updating word religously, it is vulnerable to attack without all of the updates.

Virusscan would be prudent, as well as scans for other malware.

It's the only copy of Microsoft Works that I've ever owned. I got it in 2000 and have been running it on this machine for three years with no problems at all.

Not sure what you mean by updating it religiously. Microsoft does not support Works 2000 since they have Works 2006. I can't even download the cleanup tool for this version. I heard Microsoft will stop supporting the desktop version of Works altogether and will start forcing you to use a web based program.

I'm constantly using Windows Update and installing security updates and my AVG virus program has not found any virus. I run AdAware all the time also.

Weird. I'm going to attach my own [file]NORMAL.DOT[/file], it's safe (AFAIK), but YMMV.

That's what I was hoping that someone would do since it would be worth a try but your file didn't upload.

My other option is to get my Windows 98SE computer out of storage and use it and dig through all my boxes to find the Windows 2000 install disc so I can reformat and reinstall Windows on this corrupt machine.
