lots of current dvd players will playback AVI files ... look for the Divx or Xvid logo. if you see DVD advertised as Mpeg-4 it could be avi or asf. I would recommend you consider units that explicitly state 'Divx certified'. You will have to hunt down the models but a good place to start would be Bestbuy/Future Shop's website.

Just look to the left on our site in: 'DVD Players'. Check 'Divx/Xvid' in the 'Video formats' box and it should give you a few recommendations. If you find a couple of models you like, come back and ask about them in the DVD Player Forum to see what opinions other members may have of them. That's where I am moving this thread.

    And welcome to our forums.

Philips DVP-5140 (can be made region free with a simple hack)
Philips DVP-5960 (can be made region free with a simple hack)
Pioneer DV-393-S (can be bought region free but you can't do it yourself)
Pioneer DV-490-S (can be bought region free but you can't do it yourself)
Oppo Digital DV-970HD (region free out of the box)

Those all use the "latest" MediaTek chipset for "best" support of DivX and XviD MPEG-4 files.

All can do PAL to NTSC from a PAL DVD but the Pioneer models have to be bought pre-modified to be REGION FREE whereas the other models can be made REGION FREE yourself.

Another option is the Oppo Digital OPDV971H which is region free and does the best PAL DVD to NTSC conversion of the batch (if you have HDMI on your TV) but it uses an older MediaTek chipset that isn't as good at DivX and XviD and the OPDV971H will be replaced soon with a new model that should make it as good as the current model when it comes to DVD but with full DivX/XviD functionality as the newer DV-970HD model.

OK so there are DVD players out there that will play AVIs, but this begs the question....
What sort of media will carry the AVI
Medium to good quality video, in AVI format is huge. As an example, I just checked the size of a three minute music video I have on my computer (in AVI format, ready to be converted to Mpeg2) and the size of this AVI is 5.2 GB, (which is normal) but this single 3 minute AVI would not fit on the standard 4.37 GB DVD-R..........
Or am I missing something here

That 5.2 gb file is probably uncompressed, the players that play AVI's usually have to use the Divx or XVID codecs.

  8. AVI is a container. It can contain audio and video in any number of different compressed (or not) formats. Divx certified players play AVI files with Divx compressed video (and usually other MPEG4 codecs like Xvid). I don't know of any players that will play uncompressed RGB, uncompressed YUY2, or DV compressed video in an an AVI, or any other, container.

For media, most will play AVI files on ISO DVD and CD. Some, like the Philips DVP 5960, will play AVI from a USB thumbdrive or hard drive.
